Project description

Today's ship bridges are often composed of a large number of individually approved systems, usually built on very different user interface philosophies. This has led to fragmented workplaces with high development costs and insufficient usability. The OpenBridge Design System was created to solve this problem through open innovation in close collaboration with 27 private, public and academic actors.

The project aimed to create a maritime design system that could facilitate the development of user-friendly and cost-effective ship bridges and future land-based workplaces. The concept should make it possible for equipment suppliers to deliver one implementation that can be integrated in all ODES-compatible bridge systems without adaptation and without reducing safety and robustness.

Results

The project has carried out a large number of design cases together with the industrial partners. These cases have revealed industrial needs and made it possible to both develop and test a common maritime design system. New user test methods have been developed, the basis for a new type of approval, a description of the system for technical integration as well as design guidelines and tools for the design and implementation of modern user interfaces.

The project published such a system in March 2020 and throughout the rest of the project has carried out three iterations together with the project partners and external actors. The system makes it possible to create modern maritime workplaces with a holistic design independent of suppliers.

Since launch, over 700 companies from all over the world have registered to gain access to the system and several OpenBridge products are on the market. In a survey carried out by registered visitors to the OpenBridge website, we found that users believe the system will be able to increase safety on ships, as well as reduce costs associated with the development of maritime workplaces. In the last phase of the project, several new projects have been established which will take OpenBridge further. OpenAR will expand the system with resources for augmented reality technology. OpenRemote will expand the system to support operations centers on land.
