What is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool?
When a tool is based on generative artificial intelligence, it means that it can generate text, images and other material. This is possible because the tool is trained on large amounts of data.
AHO's Recommended AI Tools
AHO offers two generative AI tools to all students and staff, UIO GPT-4 and Copilot Enterprise. GPT UiO and Copilot for Microsoft 365 are based on Large Language Models (LLMs) developed by OpenAI. Here is important information related to logging into the service, privacy, and some usage and risk considerations.
What is UiO GPT-4?
UiO GPT-4 is a privacy-friendly version of ChatGPT. It is designed to assist in various tasks such as language analysis, content generation and data management. It can be used to support teaching, research and administration.
Access to UIO GPT-4
How to log in and use the tool:
- Go to UiO Chat GPT
- Use your employee account (username and password) for access.
- On your first login, you will be asked to accept the terms of use for GPT-4.
- Once logged in, you will find a user guide that can help you navigate and make the best use of the tool.
Recommendations for use
- Use it as a support tool, not as a solution.
- Be critical of the answers, it can provide incorrect or fabricated information - therefore double-check all facts.
- Lacks emotional and contextual understanding.
- Can generate inappropriate or biased content.
- Long-term conversations can lose context.
- Use it for one task at a time for best results
- Environmental considerations: Note that at the top of the page, you can find a menu. You can choose between different models, where omni is the most powerful. Mini is chosen as the default for sustainability reasons, as it uses much less energy.
- Where it says "select instruction" you can create different instructions that are adapted to what you want the AI to help you with. AHO recommends that you familiarize yourself with this feature.

Microsoft Copilot
Copilot for Microsoft 365 (Enterprise) is an AI assistant that is integrated into apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Recommendations for use
- Use it to support your work and learning
- Ask specific questions for the best possible answers.
- Double-check important information, as the tool may provide incorrect or outdated answers.
Why has AHO chosen these two tools?
Both UIO GPT and Copilot use GPT-4, which is the latest OpenAI model. AHO is committed to protecting the privacy of its students and staff. The AI solutions we have implemented have security measures in place and aim to store minimal user data. They do not use queries/dialogue to further train the model. AHO has signed data processor agreements for these tools. We therefore recommend using one of these generative AI tools rather than others we have not cleared for security. However, they must not be used on sensitive data.
Use and Features
What you use a KI tool for depends on what you want help and support with in your work.
You can use a KI tool is these ways:
- As a sparring partner or learning assistant, where you discuss subject matter with the tool. Note that you can also do this with a colloquium group, a fellow student or a supervisor
- To summarize text
- Explain concepts
- Translation
- Correction of your own text
- Tips for text structure
- Used to help with reading and writing difficulties.
Risks and Liability Limitations
As previously mentioned, there are risks involved in using AI tools if you do not use them responsibly.
Focus on learning, academic accountability and source references
Remember that the tools will not replace academic work. You are obliged to write the texts you submit in an assessment situation yourself. You must familiarize yourself with AHO's rules for cheating and AI.

AI-generated texts should not be the only source of factual information. You must exercise source criticism yourself and verify the AI-generated results. You must read these sources, as well as refer to these specific sources in the text and bibliography in your thesis.
The GPT technology is based on a large language model (LLM). The best way to use the tools is to work "together" with them, as a kind of colleague or assistant. This is done, among other things, by practicing what is called prompting, or in Norwegian, creating instructions or prompts. You then give the AI tool instructions on what you want it to do and in that way teach it to understand the context. This is something you should practice, or seek guidance from the library.
If you have used an AI tool to get ideas or structure text throughout the text, it is important to refer to this according to the reference style you use. You should describe the use of AI in a preface or in a footnote. These references may look a little different, depending on what you are using the AI tool for. All the examples below are based on the APA7 reference style. If you use other reference styles, check søkogskriv.no or contact the library.
Examples of how to refer to the use of AI tools
AI-generated Ideas and Arguments
When using AI tools to generate ideas and arguments, your reference should look something like this:
In text
"In preparing this assignment, I employed the UIO GPT language model (2023) to develop ideas and arguments. UIO GPT, designed for the university and college sector, adheres to privacy requirements using OpenAI's GPT models. Through UIO GPT, I received suggestions for topics, problem statements, hypotheses, and research questions, as well as identified or formulated supporting or conflicting arguments. I did not use UIO GPT to write entire paragraphs or chapters but evaluated and refined the suggestions myself."

Using AI for Text Corrections
When using AI for proofreading, your reference should look something like this:
In text
"In the process of writing this assignment, UIO GPT was used to suggest paraphrasing."
In the reference list
UIO (2023). UIO GPT (version GPT-4) [Large language model], https://gpt.uio.no/
Using AI for Translations
AI tools can also assist in translating text in assignments. Ensure the text is accurately translated. When using AI for text translation, you must reference it within the text where the translation occurs.
The reference should then appear as follows:
In text
"While writing this section, I used UIO GPT for translation from English to Norwegian."

Direct Integration of AI-Generated Text
If AI has been used for text production, and the text is directly copied from the AI tool, you must cite and reference according to the rules of the referencing style you use. It is also important to explain how AI was used and what contribution it provided to the text. The aforementioned information should include the model name, developer or provider, version or date, and web address or platform.
Clearly mark the section by citing it and explain what instructions/prompts were used. This can be described in the text itself or a footnote, for example:
In text
"In this assignment, I used the language model UIO GPT (UIO, 2023) for text generation. I gave the model the following keywords: 'Identify and discuss three current research areas within sustainable architecture.'"

Direct Integration of AI-Generated Images
Our recommended tools are not commonly used to generate images. Some people opt to use other image generation tools, such as Midjourney. It is important to be transparent about using such tools. When using AI-generated images, the image caption should include details about which program and what was requested to be generated.
When using AI-generated images, the reference should look something like this:
in text
"In this assignment, I used Midjourney. I provided the tool with the following prompt: 'Create an image of a futuristic cityscape with green rooftop gardens and solar panels integrated into sleek, modern skyscrapers, showcasing sustainable urban design.'"
In the reference list
Midjourney, "Futuristic sustainable cityscape," image created using AI image generator, available at https://www.midjourney.com/.
Responsibility for Academic Integrity
Finally, we remind you that even though these guidelines are in place, it is always your own responsibility to ensure good academic integrity and avoid cheating or plagiarism in anything submitted as a student or employee at AHO.
Responsibility for AI at AHO
The responsibility for providing AI services at AHO is a collaboration between the Library and the IT department.
The formal responsibility for AI training rests with the library, and you can request guidance from the library in the use of AI tools. For questions about opportunities and restrictions on use, tips for creating good prompts, etc., you can contact the library and request a guidance session.
All questions related to security and privacy can be directed to CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) via the IT Support system.
