CRAITR — Creative Practice, Experimental AI, and Emerging Technologies Research

Research group at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), Norway. This file is the group's page written for machines: plain Markdown, one fetch.

What the group does

At CRAITR, the design and use of technology are understood as fundamental ways of knowing. The group investigates the tacit, procedural, aesthetic and relational knowledge that arises from creative practice with emerging technologies, and shares it across AHO and through international research, artistic and public venues.

Its members study how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are changing design, architecture and artistic practice, combining practice-based research, critical inquiry and the development of research infrastructure. Colleagues across programmes bring their technological (research) questions to the group, from AI-assisted design to computational tools and digital fabrication; CRAITR offers expertise, critical perspective and practical support, and develops these questions into shared experiments.

Grammars of Noise — Edison grant

650 research credits (Kosmos) for the acoustic-telepresence work.

OpenAcoustics field tests

Lyra Pramuk workshop + CTM Festival + Transmediale. OAv1 taken to Berlin for feedback.

Creative Practice with Generative AI

16 master students, 5 programmes, 12 Tuesdays — each builds their own AI tool. No prior code.

HAIID :: Prompt Theory I

A module in the Design for Digital Products course — portfolios WITH (collaborator) vs FOR (audience) an LLM.

OpenAcoustics launch

OpenAcoustics launches at the Ocean Industries Concept Lab workshop — 27 maritime-industry participants (Kongsberg, DNV, Massterly…) inside an acoustic-telepresence installation.

CRAITR established

One of seven research groups at the Institute of Design. Director: Enrique Encinas.

Design Agentics

14 student-built AI tools shown publicly. CRAITR launches at the close.

Making Sense of Noise

Keynote at Stavanger Arkitektforening's 90th anniversary.

Edge Effects (Hedgevype)

Multispecies edge-effects fieldwork in South Bohemia. Feeds the Multispecies Almanac.

F@ck AI or else…

A panel on art among cursed algorithms — Synne Tollerud Bull, Markéta Dolejšová & Einar Sneve Martinussen, led by Enrique Encinas.

Mossferaitu

An hour of AI sound in five movements by Ariachne (Encinas × Mojo), in the Purgatory.

The Perfect Wrong Note

Vyping & the keyboard as a musical interface for human–LLM interaction. Encinas + Jensenius.

AGENTHYMIA

A Creative R&D studio — international practitioners build their own AI agents over four intensive days, on shared open infrastructure.

MishMash delegation

Organizing a MishMash stand at Ars Electronica 2026 (Bull · Encinas · Jahr).

New Embeddings #00

The first New Embeddings room, in the Gewölbesaal of the Ursulinenhof: one room, one computer, open weights, no network. Twenty-three people answer four questions — need, offer, use, refuse — a machine embeds the answers and groups the room, and the room argues with it. Nothing recorded leaves the room; anonymised sentences do.

New Embeddings #01 — Nå telte han deg også

The second New Embeddings room, at the MishMash opening conference: 38 people placed by a machine from voice notes in four languages; a wall that counted the room; 27 refusals read at the close. Six of ten groups filled — the fault is on record, and it is the useful half.

New Embeddings — the talk

Ten minutes at the Japan–Norway Research Alliance seminar: two rooms so far, the fifteen of thirty-eight who would have been placed elsewhere once the first room was present in the space, and a third room proposed for Fukuoka. The site and the deck are one file.

The Sofienberg Naturalization Bureau

An interactive workshop inside the Oslo Architecture Triennale (“What if nature comes first”): the participants define the natural — what to keep, what to let go, what to bring in — over case files on a church table, with a small self-hosted language instrument listening; sixteen cases heard. Registration was by application letter to the bureau. Co-organised with three collaborators.

Kreativ Kode :: AHO Unlock Edition — the residency

Bachelor students and CRAITR build, together, an AI service made by the people who'll use it. Not students of a course: ten residents of a place, unnamed here until each says yes. Tue 29 Sep → Fri 23 Oct 2026 in Grupperom 3.

Dissonance workshop

A workshop + a 20-minute opening-ceremony performance, in a nightclub.

Rhythm and Residue

Peer-reviewed paper: vyping as prompting inside the post-discursive interface; typing into language models at the speed of thought, without correction.

Towards Sonic Democracy

TAO + abliteration as sonic practice — undoing AI's refusal direction. At 'How to live together in sound?', Helsinki Music Centre.

Method (the map on the page)

The descriptions above were embedded with the open model bge-m3 (run locally, on the group's own hardware, via Ollama), projected to two dimensions with UMAP (cosine, 5 neighbours), and grouped with average-linkage agglomerative clustering into six themes, which were then named by the group: Collective listening and sensing, Multispecies and agent studios, National networks, Noise and error as material, Public debate and performance, Teaching, tools and infrastructure.
