CRAITR — Creative Practice, Experimental AI, and Emerging Technologies Research
At CRAITR, the design and use of technology are understood as fundamental ways of knowing. The group investigates the tacit, procedural, aesthetic and relational knowledge that arises from creative practice with emerging technologies, and shares it across AHO and through international research, artistic and public venues.
CRAITR (Creative Practice, Experimental AI, and Emerging Technologies Research) brings together researchers from AHO's Institute of Architecture, Institute of Design and IT. Its members study how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are changing design, architecture and artistic practice, combining practice-based research, critical inquiry and the development of research infrastructure.
Colleagues across programmes are welcome to bring their technological (research) questions to CRAITR, from AI-assisted design to computational tools and digital fabrication. The group offers expertise, critical perspective and practical support, and develops these questions into shared experiments.
CRAITR's 2026, as a machine sees it. Each point is a project, talk, course or paper from this year; nearby points are close in meaning. The descriptions were embedded with the open model bge-m3, run locally on our own hardware, and projected to two dimensions with UMAP; lines join each work to its nearest neighbours, and the six groups are found by clustering and named by us. The year plays through the map from January to October. Hover a point for details. Read this research as a file for machines (craitr.md).
Current work
Kreativ Kode 2026: a course on creative coding and AI infrastructure with AHO students, autumn 2026
New Embeddings: a participatory workshop series on how machine-learning embeddings represent a group, and how the group responds (Ars Electronica, MishMash, University of Oslo)
Dissonance: workshop and performance at NordiCHI 2026, Vaasa
AGENTHYMIA: an international residency on building AI agents, Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, July 2026
Research and dissemination
Members' research is published and presented at peer-reviewed venues including NIME 2026, NordiCHI 2026, CHI, DIS and TEI, at international festivals such as Ars Electronica 2026, and through national collaborations, including MishMash, Norway's national centre for AI and creativity. The group maintains research infrastructure such as TAO (acoustic telepresence) and OpenAmbient (maritime contexts), and contributes to AHO's development of AI infrastructure for teaching and research.
