This article frames prescribed fire as a form of ‘tinkering’, drawing on Anne-marie Mol’s concept of experimental care practices—processes in which efforts to address health challenges may necessarily involve discomfort, failure and suffering. Tinkering, understood as a collective and ongoing attempt to improve how something functions, can be compared to the careful stewardship embedded in the Sámi concept of meahcci: the coming together of human and non-human actors in practical engagements— whether in herding, foraging or maintaining landscapes in ways that make them work better. The article aims to reflect on and critically discuss approaches to land management in a near-Arctic context. It examines specific experiments aimed at restoring abandoned grasslands and explores how new forms of collective partnership might be cultivated to navigate increasingly unpredictable futures.

The interdisciplinary Future North project experimentally investigates the territories and landscapes of the High North or Subarctic regions of Northern Europe. It studies the relationship between people and their environments and attempts to map the ›future‹ landscapes that are developed through both social and individual agency. The project is founded in a conception of landscape as a shared material human experience, one that supplements the traditional conception of landscape as primarily an aesthetic category. It looks at landscape as both a result of political, cultural and social development – but it also explores landscape as an agency in the production of these. The aim of the project is to raise awareness and knowledge of new landscape typologies, to include the everyday in the category of landscape, and explore tools to articulate and narrate future thinking with and from within the landscape. Two basic archive functions are evoked here: first the systematic documentation of exploration represented by the research travel, and secondly the reading of the landscape as if it was an archive – in ways that enable new narratives about the past and present condition to emerge, thus reconditioning a contemporary space of future thinking.

The changing Arctic is of broad political concern and is being studied across many fields. This book investigates ongoing changes in the Arctic from a landscape perspective. It examines settlements and territories of the Barents Sea Coast, Northern Norway, the Russian Kola Peninsula, Svalbard and Greenland from an interdisciplinary, design-based and future-oriented perspective. The Future North project has travelled Arctic regions since 2012, mapped landscapes and settlements, documented stories and practices, and discussed possible futures with local actors. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the project, the authors in this book look at political and economic strategies, urban development, land use strategies and local initiatives in specific locations that are subject to different forces of change. This book explores current material conditions in the Arctic as effects of industrial and political agency and social initiatives. It provides a combined view on the built environment and urbanism, as well as the cultural and material landscapes of the Arctic. The chapters move beyond single-disciplinary perspectives on the Arctic, and engage with futures, cultural landscapes and communities in ways that build on both architectural and ethnographic participatory methods.

• Larsen, Janike Kampevold (2025). Tinkering care practices in a post-Arctic landscape. Fulltekst i vitenarkiv Vis sammendrag

This paper describes a set of experimental care practices developed by farmers and researchers in Varanger, East-Finnmark. In this near Arctic landscape, grasslands and grazing pastures are subject to severe encroachment by both Empetrum nigrum (crowberry) and Deschampsia cespitosa (tufted hairgrass), and as a consequence of climate change and abandonment, respectively. Inspired both by old agricultural techniques and by recent ecological research into overgrowth, a research project tests prescribed fire as a way if combatting overgrowth and revitalizing historic farmland. As our environment is starting to behave in new and often surprising ways, our landscape practices need to attune and adjust. The paper takes inspiration from Annemarie Mol’s idea of ‘tinkering’ as a tool that seeks to attune conditions and treatments. Furthermore, tinkering as a continuous effort to make something work better, may be compared to the careful management of berries, salmon and pastures encompassed in the Sámi practice and idea of meahcci, the coming together of the human and the non-human in doing; in herding, in finding shelter or in ways of making landscape and of making it work better. The project seeks tinkering care practices as grounded and embodied care practices that unfold in ‘soil time’. They are always soil, site and climate specific and thus offers an alternative to generalizing national and regional regulations.

• Morrison, Andrew & Larsen, Janike Kampevold (2015). Personas and projections. A lyrical essay on facing climate change via design fiction. Fulltekst i vitenarkiv Vis sammendrag

We identify two challenges concerning conceptualisations of communication design, design fiction and future views on the arctic. The first refers to the difficulty of mediating information and perspectives on the complexity of climate change to a wide public bombarded with conflicting perspectives and alienated from engagement with the central issues. The second refers to devising and implementing effective participative and anticipatory persuasion as counterweights to destructive practices of resource extraction. Our lyrical essay employs design fiction to explore the role of persona in elaborating points of view concerning climate change in the arctic. Persona is used as a device to engage readers in the perspectives of a discursively engineered and nuclear powered narwhal called Narratta. She recounts her journeying through a cultural landscape of the ‘future far north’ online, critiquing the world around her, jettisoning herself between seas and lakes, the present past and future. Narratta is composed by a team ten interdisciplinary designer-researchers in a co-design project into the future cultural landscapes of the arctic. Her persona allows us to project our shared and varied interests and perceptions through a single but varied voice. We have taken part in shared workshops, travelled the arctic together in a project that spans five terrains/territories and worked on joint blog entries. Our production is experimental – in the form of Narratta blogging as a member of our project team – and part of a wider media ecology that spans social and locative media and an app called MAPPA). Narratta is a speaking subject and her persona provides elements of surprise in turns of topic and attitude. We reflect on a design fiction as a means of articulating matters of climate change, cultural landscape, the lived everyday, and projections of imagined alternate literacies and futures of the arctic.

Looking at Future Norths Janike Kampevold Larsen, Oslo School of Architecture and Design The research project Future North studies and documents ongoing changes in Arctic and Subarctic landscapes and communities. Its researchers have been traveling and living in the Arctic for some years now, and have been particularly concerned with the disruptions of communities and spaces due to a increased impulse for re-industrialization. This presentation discusses some methods applied while traveling the Kola Peninsula in northwest Russia and the Norwegian Barents coast and introduces co-design work produced with local agents in the Arctic city of Vardø on the Norwegian Barents Coast. It will also critically reflect on the notion of Arctic landscapes. Northern landscapes are now subject to geopolitical interests to a degree far beyond the attention they have received in the last two centuries. However, the different modes of approach seem to unfold on certain preconceptions of what is a landscape. The presentation starts in an apt and short assumption that Northern landscapes are publicly and politically perceived of in two ways: as an above ground and a below ground landscape – one governed by the gaze, the other governed by the prices on raw materials; a viewing landscape defined by tourism and one that is defined by trade cycles and extractive industries such as oil production and mining. They are based in a desire for landscape beauty and revenue respectively. Taking Vardø as example, the presentation deals with the landscapes that are caught in between – the social landscapes of communities in distress.
