Bakgrunn og erfaring
I am an architect (MNAL) and engineer (M.Eng.) working at the intersection of material technology, ecology, and restoration practice. I am Associate Professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) and a member of CA. Circular Architecture and Material Flows.
Over the past decade, I have developed research-based design studios that explore the relationship between material innovation, building culture, and transformation. I have previously taught at the University of Hong Kong leading both undergraduate design units and Master Program electives, and Monash University, where I redesigned core components of the technology curriculum and coordinated large-scale teaching units.
Since 2013, I have supervised Diploma students at AHO, and from 2021–2024 I served as Pre-diploma Coordinator.
Ansvarsområder
At AHO, I lead and develop master design studios and seminars that integrate research, artistic development work, and full-scale prototyping. My responsibilities include:
— Development of research-based design studios
— Diploma supervision
— Integration of material research and life cycle thinking into studio teaching
Undervisning
In my teaching, I approach architecture as an ongoing material process rather than a static object. I explore how buildings emerge from cycles of extraction, production, assembly, maintenance, and reuse, and how these processes connect new construction with transformation, and industrial systems with craft traditions. To support this perspective, I work with precedent analysis, material archives, and full-scale experimentation as central pedagogical methods.
Some of the studio series I have taught at AHO:
Material Ecologies: A research-based studio series that examines material flows and the transformation of matter in architecture. The studio addresses both industrialised construction and building culture, working across new construction and restoration, and exploring how biobased and diffusion-open systems can inform contemporary practice. (2025-present)
Circular Prototyping: A design-build studio series focused on full-scale construction and assembly. Students develop and realise 1:1 projects, testing material performance, reversible detailing, and circular construction principles in practice. (2024-present)
Constructive Logic: Exploring circular material systems, earth-based construction, and the relationship between resource extraction and architectural form. (2020-2022)
Lightweight Architecture: Engaging in environmental politics, ecology, life cycle thinking, disassembly, and material optimisation through design-build approaches.(2021-2022)
Re-Store: Investigating experimental preservation and the transformation of post-war structures, positioning restoration as an active and forward-looking architectural practice. (2014-2019)
Forskning
My research investigates how material knowledge shapes architectural form and long-term performance. Now I am particularly interested on biobased materials, diffusion-open systems, and the intersection between contemporary building systems and traditional building culture.
Through research and teaching, I hope to contribute to a shift in building culture — toward a practice where biobased materials are the rule rather than the exception, and where working with existing buildings is understood as a central architectural responsibility.
My book Concrete Oslo (DOGA National Award for Architecture, 2018) reflects this ambition: making technical and historical knowledge accessible is itself a design task.
