Prompt engineering strategies emphasise clarity, specificity, and well-structured input, on the assumption that large language models (LLMs) require clean input to interpret user intent. But LLMs are pattern interpolators: they “absorb” noise through statistical reconstruction rather than strict symbol matching. Text-centric HCI has studied this tolerance for two decades without integrating it into prompt engineering as a resource. We introduce vyping as an intentional mode of prompting in which one types into LLMs at the speed of thought, without correction. We developed vyping through sustained first-person inquiry. It can be seen as a micro-practice inside a broader post-discursive turn in which meanings increasingly travel as rhythms and patterns through latent-space proximity rather than as precisely-formed symbols. The mismatch between current LLM interfaces and their (human) users has led to two common layers in implementation: (1) an orthographic residue at the interface (autocorrect, spellcheck, tidy-prompt guides), and (2) an impairment parse shadow at the training layer, a form of overalignment in which the model reads orthographic deviation as a sign that something is wrong with the user. Overall, we offer three attunements (ease, reach, and pulse) as alternatives to efficiency-first prompt engineering, and situate the practice within critical HCI traditions of seamful, frictional, and embodied interaction. The critique is structured around a seed prompt that suspends the impairment parse and makes vyping livable; its section headings are taken from the prompt’s own rules. A copy of the seed prompt is provided at the end.

In Transdisciplinary Design inquiry, the conceptual and ideational need to be clarified when relational and qualitative methodologies are enacted. This is crucial concerning complex, emergent, and urgent matters of climate change, sustainability, and collective citizenship. Theoretically, this paper covers conceptualizing scenarios as part of future-orientated envisioning and sits between design, anticipation, and foresight studies. We then propose three scenario thinking devices based on initial literature review and conceptual positioning to engage scenario thinking. The paper proposes a reframing of scenario thinking by design research as a means to inform clearer scenario building for long term sustainable collaborative futures. Methodologically, we draw on explorative and compositional methodology to reposition scenario thinking as anticipatory scenario building. The three scenario thinking devices are work-in-progress and will be investigated in the field through a series of ongoing research activities.

In shaping relations between service design and public health, one key challenge is how to meaningfully and systemically negotiate prospective services and long-term design-informed care support. In this chapter, we address this through a heuristic and exploratory ‘case’ centred in design-ethnographic and research through design qualitative inquiry by way of co-design with an inter-professional team in a non-dualist view of building care in PH. The focus is on the development and use of tangible tools in the early phase of service design to support processes of negotiation in this team concerned with building shared understanding and related strategies for allocating and connecting care in the context of establishing a new oncology ward at a leading Nordic hospital. The chapter assembled a transdisciplinary review of related research, drawing on developments in human–computer interaction on tangibility and tangible and embodied interaction. Tangible tools are three-dimensional, mediating artefacts designed to facilitate multimodal communication and interaction via situated actions afforded by an artefact’s designed physical attributes, representational and social semiotic properties. In discussion of transdisciplinary framings and actual use, we discuss the role of such tools in service design in PH and connect them to a wider approach to service ecosystems design, closing a positioning of the design-research in what we term ‘Tangible Service Design’.

In this article we explore the dynamic between the pedagogical and the urban, attending to‘agentive urban learning’. By this we mean processes by which young people build agency in the urban context, in using the resources of the city to develop their own agency and of developing agency to act within the city. By agency, we refer to the capacity to imagine and act to create individual and collective futures. Our interest is how young people develop such agentive urban learning themselves and how it might be enhanced pedagogically at school and university. Threecase studies explore different facets–the first onhow young people themselves develop this agency in situated settings and the tools that they use to reflect upon the future; the second how digital tools might be used to enhance students’ understanding of the city as a site of change, in this instance, climate change; the third how such agency might be developed collectively in partnership with other city dwellers. We concludethat a diversity of students’ engagement in urban contexts of learning offers waysfrom which to further investigate how identity, setting and stakeholder relationships matter aspart of potentially sustainable agentive learning futures.

In this article we argue that, for educators in design, urbanism and sustainability, the responsibility of connecting emergent design practice and changing societal needs into pedagogical activities demands that attention be given to ecologies of learning that explore the interplay between what is and what might be. As such, this futuring imperative brings into play a mix of modes of situated learning experience, communication and tools from design and learning to query the planned and built environment as a given, while offering alternate future visions and critiques. In this article, we argue for agile pedagogy that enables students to co-create as citizens in public spaces, through agentive multimodal construction of their identities and modes of transformative representation. Our core research problematic is how to develop, enact and critique design-based pedagogies that may allow designer-educator-researchers and students alike to co-create learning ecologies as dynamic engagement in re-making the city. This we take up within the wider context of climate change and pressing societal and environmental needs within which design and urbanism education increasingly needs to be oriented. Our inquiry is located within a shared practice of design pedagogy across two continents, and climatic and disciplinary domains between the western cape in South Africa and the far north of Norway. The main finding of this research is that pedagogies that are enabling of and attentive to the interplay of an assemblage of relational context-sensitive modalities can be conducive to sustainable and futuring design-based urban engagements.

Design Inquiry is perhaps always needing to run with scissors, that design-centred capacity and ability to work with materials, means and methods to develop research that is context specific, abstract and conceptual. This is important for collaborative and transdisciplinary inquiry in, on and through design as well as situations in which a diversity and mix of professional design expertise and design-academic analysis are included. This paper concerns the ongoing need for clarification, articulation and implementation, as well as critique, concerning how research methods and design practices may be better connected, placed and understood. Design research that is qualitative in nature needs to consider methods and means, that is epistemological challenges and opportunities, if it is to move beyond framing, using and reflecting on knowledge making as more than a blunt version of inquiry. We include a performative activity to enact a shared methodological experience of Running with Scissors.

The changing Arctic is of broad political concern and is being studied across many fields. This book investigates ongoing changes in the Arctic from a landscape perspective. It examines settlements and territories of the Barents Sea Coast, Northern Norway, the Russian Kola Peninsula, Svalbard and Greenland from an interdisciplinary, design-based and future-oriented perspective.
The Future North project has travelled Arctic regions since 2012, mapped landscapes and settlements, documented stories and practices, and discussed possible futures with local actors. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the project, the authors in this book look at political and economic strategies, urban development, land use strategies and local initiatives in specific locations that are subject to different forces of change.
This book explores current material conditions in the Arctic as effects of industrial and political agency and social initiatives. It provides a combined view on the built environment and urbanism, as well as the cultural and material landscapes of the Arctic. The chapters move beyond single-disciplinary perspectives on the Arctic, and engage with futures, cultural landscapes and communities in ways that build on both architectural and ethnographic participatory methods.

This paper presents and discusses the use of serendipity in the design and use of experimental urban mapping tools and practices. We address the issue of error in design processes by exploring the role of serendipity in an experimental cultural mapping activity enabled by an iphone app of our own design. Our approach integrates aspects of chance and arbitrariness, and thus an alternative to dominant urban mapping methodologies. Also, our mapping approach contributes to a critique of digitally based forms of knowledge and functionalist dimension of locative app development and design. The uses of emergent, accidental and vagarious discovery are studied through a series of mapping instantiations to annotate urban transect walks in several Arctic cities. Our experiments show that issues of serendipity are productive in terms of adding new dimensions of creativity to practices of mapping, i.e. they open for new ways of looking, annotating/building knowledge and producing meaning in rapidly evolving Arctic communities. We discuss how the use the mapping approach can be understood in terms of serendipity and, finally, in what ways serendipity operates and informs notions and practices of transdisciplinary, participative and situated urban mapping.

Through field work over a three-week period we situate our bodies in the landscape of Maihauen Museum and study the kinetic and kinaesthetic life of the pond on a daily basis. Thus we become visitor-researchers, temporary inhabitants the of ponds and forest, with an angle to both human and non-human participants through inhabiting of the mundane and miraculous-ness of the everyday life of ponds. In the context of the museal, the field work may create choreographic situations. Sensitive Chaos is the result of the fieldwork, presenting four works: "Pond Ballet" led Brynjar Åbel Bandlien, "Lineage Research Maihuagen" by Otto Ramstad, "Traces of water" by Thomas Prestø and "Liquid Color", by Kyuja Bae and Katarina Skår Lisa.

We analagously present the co-creation of Birkelund’s laboratory discovery of the electromagnetics of the Aurora Borealis in his Terrella machine with the generation of the Aurora Imaginaris by the Amphibious Trilogies (AT) transdisciplinary practice-based art research team. AT seeks to investigate new choreo-topographies for engaging in artistic knowledge creation in contexts and times of increasing complexity. Part of the project’s practice is to investigate speculative design as a mode of performative querying ‘dark times’ of contested truth and turblence. As part of the DARKNESS event we enact – technically, mediationally and dramaturgically - the first public appearance of a new cultural imaginary that appears in the deep arctic darken winter of Longyearbyen. The phenomenon takes the form of an experimental occurrence realised through projection mapping and via aerogel. Aurora Imaginaris as a metaphorical means to think through the incontingencies, shifting conditions and indeterminacies of changing arctic environments is achieved through its limnal qualities. Aurora Imaginaris confronts us with a new Terrella for perceiving the changing conditions of arctic environments and thinking through darkness.
