Language requirements
Language of instruction: English
University doesn’t require any official documentation such as a TOEFL or IELTS test result for incoming exchange students.
When can you apply?
Design students in their 6th or 7th semester at the time of application.
Credits and courses
The titles and content of the courses for each semester may change from year to year.
The academic year
- Autumn term: beginning of August – end of January
- Spring term: end of January – beginning of June
Expenses and scholarships
Study fees
As an exchange student you pay only the AHO semester fee.
Accommodation
Umeå University organizes housing for exchange students though the International Housing Office (IHO).
How to apply
Apply by February 1st for the autumn semester or September 15th for the spring semester.
If you are nominated for exchange, you will receive application instructions and a link to the web page where you apply for courses available. You can apply for more than one course, as long as you rank the courses. In addition to applying online, remember to send your digital portfolio/home assignment and motivational letter to the international coordinator at UID.

- Autumn semester and full academic year: 1 April – 25 April.
- Spring semester: Nomination deadline 1 October.
Application deadline for nominated students 15 October.
