Admission requirements

The course is connected to the following study programs

Course description

The course focuses on idea and form development by drawing and physical form development.

Through various drawing techniques and methods in different medias, the student will explore development of form through a rich exploration of form alternatives.

The learning will be done by exploration of form alternatives applied on products.

The course opens for an experimental and exploratory process. It is an ambition that the student shall develop many form alternatives through the widest possible solution space and develop novel forms to guide the students into development of their own aesthetical voice.

The leading framework for the development of solutions should be the material properties and suitable mass production processes for the selected material(s).

The course will lead to a physical exhibition, where the production in the course is presented, and where physical sketch models both in 2D and 3D in various materials will highlight the thematic breath and material diversity in the students' production.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge: Experience from ideation, visualization through sketching variations in product design proposals, mock-up model making, visual presentation.

Skills: Basic skills in ideation, conceptualization, 2D and 3D sketching techniques, visualization through drawing with both analogue and digital drawing tools, aesthetic assessment, visual presentation, exhibition design.

General competence: Design methods, three-dimensional form and aesthetics.

Teaching

Lectures, discussion groups, individual tutoring, individual work and deliveries.

After the task introduction, each student will present their debrief, i.e. their own interpretation of the design task, so that the student's own intention for choosing a product and process is presented and explained.

When preparing three-dimensional sketch models, the student is free to choose the material themselves. Relevant materials can e.g. be foam, clay, cardboard etc.

Examination

Form of assessment: Portfolio assessment

Grouping: Individual

Grading scale: Pass/fail

The portfolio assessment includes the following elements:

1.Delivery of visual documentation on Moodle during the course.

2. Final delivery: Visual presentation, and final exhibition.

Posters containing:

- Form studies / form exploration

- Sketches that describe new, alternative product form proposals

- Adaption to relevant production processes for chosen materials

- Digital drawing/rendering of product solutions

3D format:

- Physical sketch models

Analogue drawings (as specified)

Rendering (as specified) in digital format using Wacom tablet / I-Pad or Similar

Delivery of final course documentation on Moodle:
