Course description

Transit architecture is a strategic driver of contemporary urban transformation. New tube and train stations are civic spaces that shape metropolitan identity, accessibility, and social life. Positioned at the intersection of public space and public service, stations operate as catalysts for regeneration, densification, and sustainable mobility. They choreograph flows—of people, goods, energy, and information—while simultaneously offering places for pause and exchange.

Central to this course is the exploration of public interiors as urban frameworks: spatial systems that extend the public realm underground, across platforms, and into adjacent neighborhoods. These interiors mediate between scales—from the body to the territory—and integrate landscape, geology, engineering, architecture, material culture, and spatial ethics. How can transit architecture produce spatial qualities and tangible urban value beyond transportation efficiency?

Three case studies will be investigated through layered design methods, moving from strategic urban analysis to high-resolution architectural proposals. Studio Station is part of the Oslo Civic Studio Series, exploring civic architecture as a foundation for sustainable urban development. www.oslocivics.com

Learning Outcome

After successfully completing the course, you have acquired the following knowledge:

  • Knowledge of how architectural designs can be used strategically in urban transformation processes.
  • Knowledge of approaches and techniques for the design of public infrastructure architecture with focus on “public interiors” and added value in urban contexts.

You have acquired the following skills:

  • Learn to analyze quantitative and qualitative data and utilize them in design processes to conceptualize and articulate architectural designs.
  • Learn how to articulate multiple design scenarios and selecting specific design approaches within a realistic framework in dialogue with stakeholders.

You have acquired the following general competence:

  • Navigating complex urban conditions and translate environmental and technical knowledge into precise and resilient design proposals.
  • Critical Thinking; Programming and design of a complex public building.
  • Comparative studies of relevant typologies.
  • Design skills related to transformation and extension.
  • Discourse skills related to addressing urban transformation, development, and performance.

Teaching

Studio teaching & Project Development - with Desk Crits, Pin Ups, Mid Term, Finals. The process includes research, workshops, lectures & study trip.

The course is organized in several modules, with individual hand ins, where reference studies and urban analysis frame the development of concepts that are developed into concrete and precise architectural designs.

Physical attendance at lectures, supervision, and other educational activities is expected and necessary to achieve the learning outcomes.
