Course description

Course responsible: Søren S. Sørensen

The ACDL studio is part of a series running since 2014, placing a strong emphasis on computational tools as part of the design process and communication of ideas. The aim is to deepen and develop the students' digital toolbox in order to realize their architectural visions and prepare for work in an architectural office.

The studio is practice and research based, with an experimental approach and 3d-modeling in an iterative manner.

Parametrics and digital fabrication will be introduced, incorporating design generation and analysis to refine and develop architectural projects.

The brief for the fall 2026 semester will be to design a competition proposal for a public bath in an unconventional context/urban void in Oslo.

Learning Outcome

At the conclusion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Develop their own architectural concepts and a holistic architectural design.
  • Develop their projects in 3D in an iterative manner.
  • Utilise parametric modelling systems for architectural design and set up simple scripts independently.
  • Utilise analysis tools, simulations, digital fabrication and advanced visualisation as part of the design process.
  • Think critically about how and when to apply different tools (analogue/digital).
  • Conduct peer-to-peer mentoring and collaboration similar to an office environment.

Teaching

We have a strong connection to practice, and work in studio similar to how you would in an architectural office, encouraging lateral exchange and interdisciplinarity. The semester task will be introduced as a fictional idea competition. The students are encouraged to propose their own architectural concepts and develop them independently with mentorship and digital support from the teachers.

The projects are developed individually or in groups of two.

Aside from weekly supervisions, we offer lectures, a tutorial series called "digital toolbox", office visits, a study trip and experienced guest critics from renowned architectural offices

Physical attendance at lectures, reviews, supervision sessions, discussions, and other educational activities is expected and necessary in order to achieve the learning outcomes

Examination

Form of assessment: Project

Grading scale: Pass/fail

In order to be assessed in this course, the student must have completed the following activities and assignments:

The submitted material consists of a project description, architectural drawings, diagrams, models (digital, physical), scripts, visualizations (renders, VR, animation), a process book and other relevant material.
