Skill Bridge

By RUI HU

Designing Training Support for Immigrant Employees in Norwegian Food Factories. In food factories, training is not only about learning tasks. For immigrant employees, it is also about understanding language, routines, safety, confidence, and belonging. Skill Bridge begins from this everyday workplace challenge and explores how learning support can become more continuous, practical, and inclusive.

This diploma project explores how service design can support workplace training for immigrant employees in Norwegian food factory contexts. It started from my part-time work experience in a dietary supplement factory near Oslo, where employees had different language backgrounds, work experience, and levels of familiarity with Norwegian workplace culture.

Through desk research, interviews, empathy mapping, co-creation, feasibility analysis, and user testing, I investigated how training is experienced by employees and managers. The research showed that the challenge is not only a lack of learning materials. Training support is fragmented across work stages, practical knowledge often stays with experienced individuals, and employees’ skills and contributions are not always clearly recorded or recognised.

In response, I developed Skill Bridge, a connected learning support system with three touchpoints: a Staff Learning App, an On-site Support Device, and a Manager Platform. Together, they support preparation before work, guidance during production, review after feedback, and the maintenance of factory-specific training materials.

Storyboards of the design:

APP (Personal learning support outside production)

On-site Device (No phone production areas)

Manager Platform
