Architecture and Sculpture: Anima and the Invisible Landscapes

By August Stange

The sculpture opens a new world. A world that was not there before the sculpture came. A doorway to different dimensions. What occurs is not known until it is. This is a built world of resonance that invites you to imagine and wonder.

Where sculpture and building meet, everything can exist. They encounter, touch, collide, converge. It is a fusion, an explosion. A beginning in some sense, a seed from which this work grows. It points towards what is not always visible. The unpredictable. The contact radiates in many directions.

Sculptures are integrated within architectural forms. The fusion of sculpture and architecture creates a dialogue that explores spatialt relationships. The local and universal, physical and psychological realms is present in this dialogue. Sculpture can, and has played an important role in representing and documenting stories for a very long time. In the link with a building the sculptural elements become prominent in the buildings ability to “speak” to the spectator.

The sculpture and building dialogue allow the building to express its environment. It can celebrate values in a specific culture. It can create a physical interpretation of its surroundings. Natural phenomena in a certain environment can for example, enter the building fabric through this dialogue.

In the sculpture-building dialogue there exists a landscape that floats in and between the physical and the mental world, refracted through the prism of place and person. A place where connections transcend physical distance. It is a liberating and grounding place, bound and surrounded by ocean, mountains, humans, fish, past, present, and with futures being projected all over itself, of not yet but maybe, of promise but no obligation.

What is built continues to build in memory, in imagination, in the bodies that pass through it. Architecture and sculpture do not end at their physical edges. They extend into perception, into the unseen relations between people, place, and time. Which is I think very interesting. This is not a closed system. It is a porous one. What remains is not an answer, but a condition a heightened sensitivity to what already surrounds us.

The work stays open. Like a doorway. Like a horizon. Like something alive. And in this openness, the invisible landscapes continue to unfold.
