SentÅ

By Ryo Ryo Sumishi

Private bathrooms in new residential buildings in Oslo are predominantly designed for basic-only functionality - an enclosed windowless machine room with a sink, bathtub, shower, washing machine, toilet and dryer, undermining the potential for sociality and ritualistic.

The same has occurred in Japan - due to the spread of "unit baths" after the war. Private residential bathrooms have lost their ritual and social aspects, but facilities with these aspects, such as Sentoh (public bath) and Onsen (Hot springs) remain an integral part of Japanese society. The Japanese continue to use these bathing facilities as an extension of their daily lives. Thus, my diploma project "SENTÅ" plans a Japanese public bathhouse in Oslo, which is adapted to Norwegian society and architecture by blending Norwegian and Japanese bathing and building traditions.
