School’s Out.

By Tor Olav Osnes Holm

An educational system is an important part of any modern, democratic society, and UNICEF states that education is the key to a child’s future. In Norway the birth of the educational system came in 1739 with its first law regarding mandatory education, starting out to raise the moral and religious levels of the Norwegian people. But as society changed, the curriculum and organizing of the school system changed with it, and in 1860 the school building itself was written into law, and the typology of the rural school was born.

The chosen building for my project is Flø skule, a former primary school located at the end of the road in Ulstein municipality on Sunnmøre. Here, in the village of Flø with its approximately 180 inhabitants, the school lies just 110 meters from the sea, exposed to the harsh weather conditions of the Northern Sea.

Since it was defunct, Flø skule has had several uses; It’s been used as accommodation for pupils in the municipality, celebrating the end of the school year with an overnight camping trip to Flø, it has been partially used as a former Moods of Norway clothing store and is still used as an art gallery. My project is based on the scenario that Flø skule has never got any sort of a permanent program, and any changes outside of the necessary maintaince has been ad hoc.

My project focuses on just one of the former school buildings, but my aim is that my process of transforming and reprogramming Flø skule can be transferred to other defunct school buildings. In my project I’m not focusing on putting in a new program, but rather looking at how Flø skule has been used since it was stripped from its program as a school building, and how I can add to that use through small interventions. For my project it is important that the surrounding community is a part of making the project viable, and that my intervention should act as a team player on their behalf.

The project aims to serve two user groups: the inhabitants of Flø and the visiting athletes keen on exploring the possibility of the nature of Flø. But even though these are two separate user groups, through the interventions my project treats them as one user group, as all the area is open for both user groups. Through this means of accessibility, my project aims to create human interaction between two social groups who normally would not interact.
