Fedje Futures

By Sindre Moen

The backdrop for this Diploma is set to Fedje, a small island community at the very edge of the open ocean. Located close to a hundred kilometers north from Bergen, Fedje is a stereotypical rural suffering from the vicious forces of centralization and depopulation, leaving the municipality in a fragile state, constantly attempting to regain economical sustenance as well as the perpetual pursuit of preserving the local history and its context.

This diploma is a tiny epos that seeks to merge, react and propose alternatives to the opposing catalysts which are currently determining factors for a future at Fedje. The external, being the financial backing provided by the investor and the internal being the local community, the municipality and the historical context, played out as a series of acts portraying Fedje’s history, its former, its current and its potential new condition.

The project proposes three transformational projects of existing structures that all have historical, contextual and cultural relevance at Fedje. Yet, it also strives to tell the story of what seems to be an ongoing and contextless engagement in rural areas by investors, opportunists and developers.

Now, being left empty and recently acquired by a stakeholder, the three structures are facing new realities and are to be replaced with new programmatic demands and typologies. By utilizing the already proposed program, respectively an office, a bar and a guesthouse, the project seeks to reassess, repurpose and appropriate the existing structures, wrapped in a written narrative and its architectural outcome.
