Co-Regenerative Landscapes

Co-Regenerative Landscapes is a design-based research group advancing regeneration as a shared process between human practice and natural systems. It develops knowledge, methods and tools for landscape architecture to revive ecological systems and cultural landscapes, and build the long-term resilience of communities across Norwegian territories.

Watersheds of the Oslo Region

Co-Regenerative Landscapes investigates landscapes as living, multispecies systems, in which ecological regeneration, public participation and long-term stewardship are mutually dependent. Regeneration is understood not as a technical or ecological measure alone, but as a shared process between human practice and natural systems.

The group's research is design-based and practice-oriented. Methods range from landscape-reading, site description and the analysis of landscape dynamics, through systems-thinking and scenario-building, to legal implementation, economic strategies and dialogue tools for engaging municipalities and local communities — positioning landscape architecture as a coordinating discipline. It works multiscalarly across two areas: co-regenerating urban landscapes, examining how park systems and blue-green-brown infrastructures can be extended and intermeshed with ecological and social needs; and co-regenerating territorial landscapes, addressing hazard-prone, post-extractive and logistics-driven territories shaped by large-scale ownership structures.

The group's work builds on externally funded research, including NATURACT, ongoing PhD projects, and an extensive teaching portfolio across AHO's landscape architecture programme. It is connected, among others, to Systems-Oriented Design (SOD) at AHO and, internationally, to the EMiLA (European Master of Landscape Architecture) network.
