Thesis abstract:
Additive manufacturing, informally known as ‘3D printing’, is the varied set of technologies that produce objects directly from 3D models by successively attaching material rather than removing it. This opens the possibility for more formgiving freedom than what most traditional production methods offer. This and other innovative features have gathered attention, leading to resounding headlines such as ‘the next industrial revolution’ and ‘the future of manufacturing’.
Despite its revolutionary potential, additive manufacturing has shown only modest development beyond prototyping. Concrete end-product manufacturing successes are mostly confined to a few specific niches. The research questions that emerge from this gap between theoretical possibilities and concrete results are what defines a suitable niche for AM design, how to identify novel suitable niches, and how to develop them.
This thesis by compilation builds an answer to these questions through ten publications integrating elements from widely diverse fields. Drawing on these sources and perspectives, this dissertation distils theory and methodologies in a bottom-up fashion to develop a better understanding of how additive manufacturing production niches operate, fostering advances in additive manufacturing design.
Biography:
The quest to explore different areas, ranging from arts to technical innovation, has taken Ricardo from Chile to Italy, to Switzerland and finally to Norway, earning degrees in music performance, cultural management, and early music along the way. All these fields manage to come together in this research project, which operates at the intersection of additive manufacturing technologies, design, music, and innovation.
