Grading System
The grading system at AHO is either a two-tier scale of Pass/Fail, or a five-point letter grade scale from A to E for a pass, and F for a fail.
Table of the Letter Grade Scale:
| Symbol | Betegnelse | Generell, kvalitativ beskrivelse av vurderingskriterier |
| A | Excellent | An excellent performance, clearly outstanding. Demonstrates a high degree of independent thinking. |
| B | Very good | A very good performance that is above average. Demonstrates a very good degree of independent thinking. |
| C | Good | A good performance that is satisfactory in most areas. The candidate demonstrates good judgement and independence in the most important areas. |
| D | Satisfactory | An acceptable performance with some significant shortcomings. The candidate demonstrates a certain degree of judgement and independence. |
| E | Sufficient | The performance meets the minimum criteria, but no more. The candidate demonstrates limited judgement and independence. |
| F | Fail | A performance that does not meet the minimum academic criteria. The candidate demonstrates a lack of both judgement and independence. |
Failed Examinations
Resit Examinations
If you receive a "Fail" or "F" in a scheduled exam (such as a written school exam), you will be offered the opportunity to register for a resit examination. Resit exams for autumn semester courses are held in June, and for spring semester courses in August.
Supplementary Submissions
If you receive a "Fail" or "F" on a submitted project assignment, you will be given the opportunity to supplement your material for a new assessment.
To be eligible for a supplementary submission, you must:
- Have submitted the original exam in accordance with the submission requirements.
- Apply for the supplementary submission within one week after the results are published on Studentweb.
You cannot make a supplementary submission if you:
- Have withdrawn from the examination
- Have submitted a blank script or too few pieces of wor
- Have lodged an appeal against the exam result
Supplementary submissions are not permitted for diploma examinations.
If a Master's thesis within continuing and further education is graded as a fail, a revised thesis may be submitted for assessment one more time.
The reassessment will normally be completed before the start of the following semester.
If a supplementary submission in the undergraduate programme does not result in a passing grade, you must retake the course in its entirety the next time it is run. The same applies to mandatory courses at Master's level.

Blank Submissions
Submitting a blank script or abandoning an exam without valid documentation will result in a "not submitted" status and will count as an exam attempt.
You will not be allowed to make a supplementary submission if you submit a blank script.
Statement of Reasons
For written exams or assignments, you must submit a request for a statement of reasons within one week after the grade is published. Grades are published on Studentweb within three weeks of the examination.
When will I receive the statement of reasons?
You will normally receive the statement of reasons within two weeks of your request. The statement will explain your grade and provide an assessment of your performance.
The statement is provided in writing. The examiner only receives access to information relating to the specific student they assessed who has requested a statement.

Appeals
Appeals against Examination Results / Grades
Consider carefully whether you wish to appeal. Please note that you cannot appeal the new grade, and that this grade is final. The new grade may be better than, equal to, or worse than the original grade.
The deadlines for appealing a grade are:
- Three weeks after the examination result is published.
- Or three weeks after you have received the statement of reasons for your grade, or a response to an appeal regarding formal errors.
Group Examinations
There is an individual right of appeal for group examinations. Each individual group member who wishes to appeal must submit their own appeal. Any change to a grade following an appeal will only apply to the student who lodged the appeal.

What happens after I have appealed?
After you submit your appeal, your exam script will be reassessed. The script will be marked by at least two new examiners, at least one of whom will be an external examiner. The examiners will not be informed of your original grade.
You have the right to withdraw your appeal until the matter has been decided. You can do this by contacting your student advisor.
Appeals regarding Formal Errors in the Conduct of Examinations
Appeals regarding formal errors during examinations are handled by the Academic Affairs and Workshops Section.
You have the right to withdraw the appeal until the matter has been decided.
Formal errors may include:
- Errors in the exam paper that may have affected the result
- Errors during the conduct of the exam that may have affected the result
- Errors in the grading process that may have affected the result
The deadlines for appealing formal errors are:
- Three weeks after you became aware of the circumstances you are appealing
- Or three weeks after you have received the statement of reasons for your grade, or a response to an appeal against a grade
Processing of Appeals regarding Formal Errors
The Academic Affairs and Workshops Section will evaluate the case and may:
- Reject the appeal (for instance, if the appeal deadline has passed)
- Overturn or amend the decision if the appeal is deemed justified
- Uphold the decision
If the Academic Affairs and Workshops Section finds that formal errors were committed, and it is reasonable to assume that this may have affected the performance of one or more candidates, it may be decided that a reassessment will be conducted or a new exam will be held.
If the decision is upheld, the appeal will be forwarded to the AHO Appeals Committee, which will make a final decision on the matter. You cannot appeal the decision of the Appeals Committee.
