  The recent discovery in the Vatican archives of a record of a 1550 privilege granting papal protection to Sebastiano Serlio for ten years for ‘certain works on architecture and painting’, both in print and yet to be published, provides new evidence for the workings of this form of copyright and the value of such privileges to authors and printmakers in the sixteenth century.

  This article probes into the little explored topic of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s hunt for, obsession with, and dependence on prints. Goethe’s travel memoirs from Italy and Rome, written mostly in restrospect and published with the title Italian Journey, reveal a multitude of references to graphic reproductions of Roman art and architecture. The prints Goethe preferred were often ones that represented buildings and paintings in states in which they no longer existed. Thus, print not only helped Goethe remember, but they illustrate remembrance itself, and I shall argue that Goethe’s view on prints, therefore, complicates the conventionally held opinion of copying in the Enlightenment. The second part pursues Goethe’s attitude to copies further. Leonardo’s Last Supper became an icon of the age not the least thanks to Goethe’s essay on the fresco and his endorsement of Raphael Morghen’s engraving of it. The 19th-century reception of this rapidly deteriorating Renaissance masterpiece, in fact, outlines a notion of reproduction that precedes, also conceptually, Walter Benjamin’s reduction of the idea of copying to the level of mere duplication. In fact, Goethe endorses a creative reproduction that gently reanimates the original, so to speak, which this article will define as a historicist vision of copying.

  Why were seventeenth-century antiquarians so spectacularly wrong? Even if they knew what ancient monuments looked like, they deliberately distorted the representation of them in print. Deciphering the printed reconstructions of Giacomo Lauro and Athanasius Kircher, this pioneering study uncovers an antiquity born with print culture itself and from the need to accommodate competitive publishers, ambitious patrons and powerful popes. By analysing the elements of fantasy in Lauro and Kircher's archaeological visions, new levels of meaning appear. Instead of being testimonies of failed archaeology, they emerge as complex architectural messages responding to moral, political, and religious issues of the day. This book combines several histories - print, archaeology, and architecture - in the attempt to identify early modern strategies of recovering lost Rome. Many books have been written on antiquity in the Renaissance, but this book defines an antiquity that is particularly Baroque.

  Maleren Christian Skredsvig (1854-1924) bodde i Roma og Paris i begynnelsen av 1880-årene. Han var tilsynelatende lykkelig gift og triumferte som den ”franskeste” av våre malere, men denne boken gir overraskende perspektiver på etablerte oppfatninger, og legger frem nye oppdagelser om Skredsvig både som kunsthandler, maler og ektemann. Boken er rikt illustrert og flere av hans malerier vises her for første gang. Skredsvig var også en glimrende forfatter, og i brevene kombinerte han bilder og tekst på en måte som skapte – ja, nettopp brevkunst. Hans brev til svigerfaren og kunstsamleren Frithjof Plahte – publisert her for første gang – står i en særstilling. Ikke bare er dette den viktigste brevsamlingen vi har fra Skredsvig, men kanskje fra noen norsk maler i tiden. Det skyldes ikke minst illustrasjonene – over 30 i alt – som utgjør en katalog over Skredsvigs malerier – tegnet i miniatyr. Maken finnes verken hos ham eller hos hans samtidige. Her er hovedverk skissert for første gang, men også verk som er bortkomne, ja, brevtegningene er dateringsgrunnlag for bilder som fremdeles dukker opp. De utfordrer også ideen om Skredsvig som friluftsmaler, og avslører at maleriene ofte var baserte på gamle formler som han simpelthen fylte inn på nytt. Boken kaster nytt lys på forholdet til konen Maggie, ett av de store ekteskapelige dramaene i tiden: Standsforskjellen, sidesprangene og skilsmissen, danner en historie som kunne vært hentet ut av litteraturen, og gjør et like rystende inntrykk i dag som i fin de siècle Kristiania. Men 1880-årene var fremfor alt gullalderen i nordisk kunst og kulturliv, og boken skildrer vennskapene med Eilif Peterssen, Joakim Skovgaard og Ernst Josephson, samt møter med Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson og Jonas Lie – for å nevne noen.

  Victor Plahte Tschudi’s Dr. art dissertation Reprintring Rome; Giacomo Lauro and the Transformation of Antiquity (1600) is concerned with a rarely discussed material, that of reconstructions of Roman antiquities, which thanks to the medium of print became popular from ca. 1550 onwards, spreading all over Europe. Their fantastic, often unexplainable appearances are at odds with common knowledge at the time, and the central question is: if they are not archaeological – in a modern sense of the word – what are they? I shall argue that a new visual culture was decisive. My hypothesis is that the actual picturing produces not only a means to envision antiquities, but the antiquities themselves. The evidence exists in two distinct areas: first, in the rapidly growing culture and industry of printmaking in Rome from mid cinquecento, and second, in a series of visual genres and expressions that were fundamentally modern, exemplified in this discussion by the Renaissance perspective, the Baroque church façade, and the Mannerist emblem. The study is also a chapter in the story of the Roman antiquarian-engraver Giacomo Lauro, and his Antiquae Urbis Splendor from 1615. His reconstructions, I shall argue, represent a new turn in archaeology, distinguished from the 16th century antiquarian ideal of erudite knowledge, as well as from the new empirical and systematic standards born in the 18th century. Lauro’s prints represent a confluence of traditions – guidebooks to Rome, reconstructive maps, and print collections. At the same time they convey contemporary issues in art, religion and moral – in the manner of ‘signs’– making antiquities appear as interacting with contemporary architecture, often well-known projects across Europe. This study concludes that Lauro represents an antiquarianism which in the final instance may be termed ‘Baroque’.
