Background and experience
Professor, architect, filmmaker, multimedia artist
Rolf Gerstlauer is professor at the Institute of Architecture at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design AHO. He conducts a progressive-experimental teaching for master levels and produces a body of independent artistic research in the fields of architecture, photography, filmmaking, multimedia installations and the performing arts including land art and earthworks.
Neuroqueering architectural phenomenology, his teaching and research interests employ transdisciplinary artistic investigations to reflect anew on what he has termed Body & Space Morphologies; the various (dis)embodied human conditions that exist within a more-than-human post-natural world. At the crossroad of the current times, dwelling on this ambiguous territory with blurred borders and equally unclear or frightening purviews, he keeps pondering the question of how to create an uncompromised architectural know-how to help us act differently, be more responsive and less exclusive.
Areas of responsibility
Gerstlauer has been teaching and supervising master students and diploma thesis projects at AHO since 1995. Having received tenure in 2006, he is responsible for developing master-studios with artistic research content integral to the Body & Space Morphologies teaching and research aims.
As the former academic leader of the Building Art faculty group, he was appointed head of the Institute of Architecture and in lead of the program-committee restructuring AHO’s curriculum for the education in architecture. He devotes himself to promote student autonomy and creativity, and beliefs artistic research dedicated to the studies in architectural phenomenology to be a necessary parallel to both traditional scholarly research and common architectural design practice.
