Background and experience

Luis Callejas is an architect, professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and founder of LCLA OFFICE. Recently he is also visiting professor in landscape architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In the past, he taught architecture at Yale as Louis Khan visiting professor (2020), architecture and landscape architecture at Harvard GSD (2012-2016), The Scola da Cidade in São Paulo (2011) and The University of Toronto as visiting professor in Urban Design (2012). In 2020 he was the recipient of the Patrick Geddes fellowship at the University of Edinburgh.

He is the director of the Practice and Design Techniques research group at AHO.

Completed public works include design of the exterior areas in the renovation of the former US embassy in Oslo designed by Eero Saarinen, the renovation of the National Stadium in Colombia and the aquatic sports centre in Medellin for the IX South American games. His studio currently develops projects for the Norwegian Scenic Routes in Norway.

Luis Callejas lectures widely in Europe, North America and Latin America, he has participated in major biennales over the past decade, including the Venice biennale, Lisbon Triennale, Oslo Triennale, Seoul biennale and the Versailles biennale. His research has addressed the intersection of architecture and landscape architecture, studying their shared design research techniques and tropes, as well as their shared historic encounters when addressing climate change through design. He was awarded the Lissone design prize in 2024, The Modernism in America Award of Excellence and the Architecture League of New York prize for young architects among others. He has served as jury for many competitions, including the Iberoamerican architecture biennale, the Barcelona landscape biennale and the Holcim Award for Sustainable Architecture.

His books include Pamphlet Architecture 33: Islands and Atolls (Princeton Architectural Press), editor of Pedagogical Experiments in Architecture for a Changing Climate (Routledge), Houses in forest clearings (Actar) and the series Under-Under (Arkitektfaglig Press).

This book presents a series of pedagogical experiments translating climate science, environmental humanities, material research, ecological practices into the architectural curriculum. Balancing the science and humanities, it exposes recent pedagogical experiments from renown educators, while also interrogating a designer’s agency between science and speculation in the face of climate uncertainty. The teaching experiments are presented across four sections: Abstraction, Organization, Building, and Narrative, exposing core parts of an architect’s education and how educators can simultaneously provide fundamental skills and constructive literacy while instigating environmental sensibilities. Chapters cover issues such as an unstable hydrosphere, water infrastructure, remediating materials, methods of disassembly and adaptive reuse, as well as constructing new aesthetic categories of climate change, and implementing oral histories of construction, among many others. Written and edited by expert design educators actively engaged in experimenting in new forms of pedagogy, this book will be of great use to architecture instructors at all levels looking to renew their teaching practices to more directly address the climate emergency. It will also appeal to those academics across the built environment interested in the ways design can affect and adapt to climate change.

Abstraction, addresses pedagogies that rely on reductive and graphically abstract ways to synthesize environmental factors into design at different scales, from landscapes to buildings. The group of projects presented here demonstrates a renewed relevance for graphic abstraction as a commanding tool that empowers students to produce concrete visual experiments that turn information from scientific sources into material and spatial experiments. The term abstraction, which in the postmodern era has often been associated with violent reductionism or the exclusion of the figural and symbolic aspects of architecture, is once more embraced as a creative instrument to transform the increasingly complex available information on climate into design decisions and new aesthetics, even at the early stages of design education.

This article investigates how airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) point cloud data and their embedded data models can serve as the basis for revealing, studying, and manipulating clearings in the urban forest situated in the north of Oslo. Furthermore, the article describes the unique high-resolution public and open digital data and infrastructure that surveys these landscapes in Norway. The main research question is concerned with whether the extensive public data available in Norway can reveal unseen and undervalued clearings with potential value as remnants of an important and unique cultural landscape practice. The methodology involves sampling data models from prevalent publicly available urban planning and forest management datasets and applying them to high-resolution lidar scans of the forest. Beyond the initial identification of precise landscape figures, this methodology introduces a creative visual workflow to appreciate, evaluate and work with the previously undervalued clearings in the Oslo forest. The article further hypothesizes on how certain morphological conditions of the Oslo forest clearings are only thoroughly visible and open to analysis and manipulation through high-resolution lidar surveys. The value of the particular case of Oslo is twofold. First, the databases in Norway for performing such analysis are entirely public, facilitating the necessary accessibility to conduct such research. Second, a history of careful urban forest management, reconciling the public use of the forest with the interests of commercial forestry, have developed into unique and delicate ways to perform clear-cutting in the urban forest around Oslo. The convergence of these two outlined unique conditions present the need to perform this study in Oslo rather than in other locations; however, the workflow and methodology described here could be applied to other forested areas in the presence of available data and unique aspects of clear-cutting that can be re-valued through imaging. The nature of lidar data collection, analysis, and applications in a design workflow are generally understood, and its disciplinary implications are generally well delineated (URECH et al. 2020); however, working creatively with the data opens an under-explored arena for design disciplines, one in which the aesthetic, poetic and formal evaluation of the data is used not to classify the land and tree cover (BELL et al. 2018), but to instead scout and reveal landscape entities typically seen as of lesser value or simply under-described. As geospatial data becomes raw matter and part of the everyday design workflow of architecture and landscape architecture practice (URECH et al. 2020), designers need new ways to frame data as creative media in these disciplines. In this article, we describe the base condition of geospatial data as multivariate (ASH et al. 2018) - many definitions and derivatives of itself in dependence on the systems they are embedded in. We introduce terminologies such as model sampling and data scouting to give way to the formulation of data models in landscape architecture, with a particular focus on lidar surveys of the forest around Oslo.

This book’s starting point is a selection of seventy photographs by Luis Callejas. These images depict three house designed by his office in two forest clearings in the Andes mountains. Accompanying these photos are drawings and three parallel con- versations between Luis Callejas and Matteo Ghidoni, Elisa Cattaneo, and Jørgen Tandberg. The photographs were taken during three trips between Norway and Colombia. Most were taken with the same 35 mm lens, avoiding wide angles encompassing each small space within a single frame. The ensuing conversations were prompted not by direct experience, but by sharing the photographs with the invited contributors. Together, these images and conversations address the parallels between the construction of a house, the modification of a clearing, and the legibility of their mutual interdependence. The three houses were built in modified and constructed forest clearings.

The Embassy is a project that transforms the former US Embassy in Norway. The project was originally designed by the American architect Eero Saarinen, as one of only three buildings in Europe. The building is both restored and adapted to new use with a large new addition under the building.

A Civic/Institutional Design Award of Excellence is given for the restoration and adaptive reuse of the former U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway. This 1959 chancery, designed by Eero Saarinen, is a significant example of postwar Modernist architecture, embodying American values during the Cold War. Saarinen's striking design, particularly the precast concrete facades, was a technological first for Norway. Over decades, the façades had faded and deteriorated. The preservation team treated damaged areas, and the entire surface was buffed by hand, restoring the original sheen. An underground extension and a discreet rooftop addition were added to meet current needs without altering the building’s external appearance. Landmarked interiors, including the atrium and ambassador's office, were restored with sustainable materials while retaining character defining features. The U.S. State Department has been decommissioning and selling off its Modernist embassies, and many are being demolished, gutted or altered beyond recognition. Docomomo US has long advocated for preservation of these buildings, many of which are highly significant. This project is a rare example of an entire embassy building being saved and carefully restored.

Détailler, formuler, construire présente les travaux des étudiant·es de première année de la formation architecte-ingénieur à l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Versailles et à CY Tech, réalisés entre 2022 et a2024. Conçu et dirigé par l’architecte et enseignant Nicolas Dorval-Bory, ce cours explore l’analyse et le dessin de détails constructifs et s’achève par la construction, à l’échelle 1, de pavillons en bois. Le livre s’articule en trois parties : - Une petite histoire de l’architecture : trente détails de bâtiments construits entre 1954 et 2022 y sont documentés à travers dessins, notices techniques et formules scientifiques. On y croise de grandes figures de l’architecture — Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lina Bo Bardi, Lacaton & Vassal, Kazuyo Sejima, Peter Zumthor, Comte Meuwly — et des édifices emblématiques de la seconde moitié du XXᵉ siècle. - Les pavillons construits : une série photographique restitue les neuf pavillons réalisés par les étudiant·es, matérialisant leurs recherches dans des projets à échelle réelle. - Regards critiques : des textes de Cédric Libert, Tiphaine Abenia et Klaas de Rycke prolongent la réflexion sur l’interprétation du détail architectural et sur la construction à l’échelle 1, envisagées à la fois comme méthode pédagogique et comme outil de conception prospective. In a region of Colombia affected by drought, water reservoirs can be erected without a building permit. By conceiving the reservoir as a structure that not only fulfills a certain practical function, but also supports a platform with steps, it is possible to create a larger housing space. Initially, the structure can be used as an observation post, allowing us to enjoy the beauty of the oblique landscape. Over time, walls and a light roof can be added, transforming the reservoir into a small self-sufficient dwelling. In this framework, we find freedom navigating the omissions of the buildability regulations for this type of rural context. The construction of a reservoir, as a pragmatic solution related to water scarcity, becomes a habitable space. The deep foundations, comprising a single cutout, for the construction of the reservoir, are sufficient to accommodate, simultaneously, the platform and the small house to come, despite the seismic nature of these territories.

Landscape as Urbanism in the Americas is the second issue of NESS.docs, focused on the concepts and terminology coined by Charles Waldheim and the OFU from Harvard GSD on the potentials for landscape as a medium of urban intervention in the specific social, cultural, economic, and ecological contexts of Latin America cities. Landscape as Urbanism in the Americas features more than twenty projects developed by Latin American practices, who also reflected on their work and its ecological and territorial implications. Ness.docs gathers original texts from Latin America Practices as well as essays on different urban specialists’ point of view. The second issue of our monographic series reflects on the project of Landscape as Urbanism in the Americas, lead by Charles Waldheim and the Office for Urbanization at Harvard Graduate School of Design. Curated together with Mercedes Peralta and Jeannette Sordi, NESS.docs 2 explores the potentials for landscape as a medium for urban intervention in the specific contexts of Latin-American cities. More than twenty Latin American practices are shown and grouped in five different themes: Biological Environments, Resilient Grounds, Performative Systems, Revealed Protocols, and Assembled Natures. Finally, a conversation between Charles Waldheim, Florencia Rodriguez, and Luis Callejas deepens the discussion of our academic curricula, drawing as representation, political spaces, and the general sensitivity around landscape.
