Jumping conversations are essential when working with complexity. When talking about complex situations, one needs to find interconnections. Therefore, there is a need to jump between the different connected places in a complex system. There is a need to facilitate jumping conversations that are inclusive and fluid. We have experience from numerous organisational workshops on how gigamaps work as mediating tools.

This paper investigates the application of co-creation sessions as a method in the early phases of development projects. The target is to do an early validation of stakeholder needs prior to project start. Co-creation sessions engage key stakeholders to share knowledge in collaborative exercises to gain a mutual understanding of the problem and build a solution landscape. We study three co-creation sessions in early phase development projects by using interviews and feedback surveys in an industry-as-laboratory approach. The co-creation method is based on design thinking techniques, system oriented design and other visual tools. The sessions are facilitated to provide active participation of key stakeholders, achieved by using hands-on activities. The results imply that co-creation sessions contribute to anchor, align, and validate stakeholder needs, but do not necessarily elicit stakeholder needs. The study indicates that co-creation sessions increase customer engagement and can potentially lead to new development projects.

The resent movement of Systemic Design seeks for new synergies between Design and Systems. While the usefulness of s ystems approaches in design has been fairly obvious, this paper argues that m any core concepts in design are beneficial in systems thinking. This seems reasonable when it comes to the concept of Design Thinking. However, as this paper argues, the more practical core concepts of desig n are equally important. Designerly skills have been regarded as belonging mai nly in the realm of traditional commercial design, whereas design thinking has been regarded as useful in strategic management settings. This p aper argues against the idea of sep arating design thinking from design action. The skills and competences of design, such as the composition of the sha pe and form that are obvious in product design, are central to Systems Oriented Design (SOD). SOD is a version in the emerging pluralistic f ield o f Systemic Design. The Systemic Design movement should recognise the core values of design and integrate them in systems thinking. This integration would contribute to innovation in both Systemic Design and systems thinking . Among the core competence s of design discussed in the paper are compositio n, choreography, orchestration, the notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk and open - ended multi - scalar design strategies that allow for both structural and organic development. The paper provides examples to support its proposal for the use of concrete aesth etic principles to guide Systemic Design processes. This paper expands the working paper entitled “Holistic and dynamic concepts in design: What design brings to systems thinking”, which was presented at the RSD3 symposium (2014).

This paper introduces a new perspective on systems thinking in design related to questions of sustainability. We argue that designers need to look at sustainability in an integrated manner where technical, economical and social aspects are embedded in an ecological holistic view. Sustainability is not just another requirement in the design process but needs to form the foundation for all design work. Systems-oriented Design is a new concept which is currently being researched and developed by the lead-author. It draws on existing concepts of systems approaches especially Soft Systems Methodologies and Critical Systems Thinking and contributes by developing design proprietary methods, techniques and skills. By defining systems thinking as a design practice with its own particular set of methods and skills the approach becomes closely linked to a designerly way of thinking and making. The main aim of this approach is to involve deeper in all aspects of a design project. In this way the designer can be enabled to address a much greater complexity, to assimilate very large amounts of information and to produce new innovative interventions. We argue that these are requirements and skills needed for the designer to address sustainability in a holistic way.

The main approach of this paper is to look at design research from a systems-oriented perspective. This implies that design research is understood as a dynamic and emergent field of interrelated or contradicting thoughts, concepts and ideas. The first three sections of this paper draw cross-sections into the emerging richness in design research as it matures as a genuine mode of knowledge production. They address some of the positions, concepts, and discussions going on in the field, arguing that practice research in design is the most central. The current state is discussed and the relation between design research and other modes of knowledge production are looked at. A main tendency seems to be that design research is moving towards greater complexity both in issues and approaches and that Research by Design is becoming ever more central. Research by Design emphasizes insider perspectives, a generative approach, operates in rich and multiple layers and relates to real life contexts. The output is new communicable knowledge that is only found within design practice. The next two sections of the paper discuss the various possible relations between design practice and reflection. These span from distant perspectives where design practice is observed by outsider researchers, looking at practice retrospectively or contemporarily as in case studies, to participatory research and insider perspectives where the designer-researcher uses his or her own practice as a means for investigation and a bases and subject for reflection and knowledge production. The last section proposes the critical application of multiple perspectives, methods and media in composite approaches to design research. This analysis does not claim to provide a complete picture, but it suggests a method of looking at the field of design research in both a more holistic and more specific way. This could be helpful to position the individual design researchers approach in the complex landscape of design research. Arguing that ?traditional sciences? are very complex and manifold, design research is in itself a very complex, if not one of the most complex field of knowledge production. The paper claims that such a complexity demands an equally rich repertoire of interrelated methods and positions.

Research by Design is the theme of this first special guest edited issue of FORMakademisk. In this issue we look into a growing domain of design research that takes up relations between practice and theory that are pertinent for inquiry in the interdisciplinary approaches and frameworks that are often central to research in design (Rust et al. 2005). As the articles gathered here show, this is research than spans a range of established and emerging areas and their methods and analyses. The articles indicate how far design research has moved from earlier locations in craft traditions and historical analyses and characterisations and perspectives lodged in industrial design. These views do still matter, but they are now part of the changing profession of design and a burgeoning body of international research.

The world is becoming an increasingly complicated place to relate to. This applies to many fields: politics, economics, culture and information. And design is no exception. There are ever higher demands for more knowledge, following trends and the capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration. The context designers operate in is becoming increasingly composite. Rules and regulations are one manifestation of globalisation, along with the increasing focus on the consequences manufacturing and consumption have for the environment, economic systems, users and our ecological footprint. The Fair Trade movement is also gaining influence. The increasing complexity of the actual process of producing a product is the result of the fact that a growing network of stakeholders has to be consulted – both within the customer’s organisation and also through regulations, customer surveys, focus groups and user involvement. The stakeholders constitute a field of intentions that are at times contradictory.

For the last few years some design studios at the Oslo School of Architecture have explored a system-oriented perspective to design. The background and ultimate motivation is caused by globalisation. The human world is becoming increasingly entangled in networks of complex interdependencies and relations. An intervention or systemic change in Europe can have critical impact somewhere else on the planet. Even seemingly insignificant artefacts have an influence on the systemic context they are embedded in. If we want to solve the resource situation for the future and avoid the destruction of the planet we need a consistent concern with the systemic influences of our artefacts and actions. More than ever it matters what we do and how we do it. Today we talk of sustainability in a much more inclusive way than before. The social, political, material, and technological sides of sustainability are interlinked.

The third Oslo symposium engaged over 200 participants and over 50 authors, and we found a much broader range of contributions across related fields of design and systemics. The 5 keynote speakers established a significant presence for the field, “relating” from both the systems and design disciplines. The emerging renaissance of systems thinking in design responds to the increasing complexity in all challenges faced by designers, strategists, and transdisciplinary innovators. We are facing deeply entangled problematics in natural, social, economic, and political systems. Our professional and organizational worlds have become too complex for linear goal-driven management, and the solution of conventional design thinking is insufficient to address complexity across domains, scales, and networks. New thinking, new knowledge, and new forms of intervention are required to take on this web of interconnected challenges. The core planning team of the RSD symposia established the Systemic Design Research Network organized as a collaborative research group shared between AHO and OCAD University and independent researchers. Last year Peter Jones also initiated a Systemic Design track and interest group at the Washington ISSS conference, which continues into 2015 with the Berlin conference. European participants of RSD3 might be encouraged to know that we are planning a one-day special track for ISSS Berlin, preceding the conference. Papers and presentations were organized for the following themes: •Social Design •Education •Service Design and Design for Public Services •Theories and Methods of Systemic Design •Business and Enterprice Design, Sustainability and Economic Policy •The Built Environment •Systems Oriented Design These proceedings are the result of a dialogue and discursive process within the community of practice, more than that of a traditional scientific publication process. The process contains five steps, creating long term engagement, low entry threshold as well as high level final output: 1) the submission and peer reviewing of abstracts, 2) the presentations and dialogues at the RSD3 symposium, 3) the postproduction and submission of a working papers, 4) the publication of the symposium proceedings with AHO as publisher 5) the publication of selected fully developed and peer reviewed scientific papers in an external publishing channel. This process was tested with RSD2 and worked very well resulting in two special issues of the scientific design research journal FORMakademisk. RSD3 is following the same process with fully developed and peer reviewed selected publications in a new speciall issue of FORMakademisk and a volume of collected papers on Systemic Design for the Springer series in Translational System Sciences. In addition to the originally submitted abstracts the RSD3 proceedings contains the working papers and presentations. These were submitted after the symposium by most, but not, all authors. How may the inherent abilities of the designer contribute to the development of systemic design? This presentation will be a rhetoric monologue that will discuss some of the ideas and approaches known in design over a long period of time. It will discuss these in relation to the emerging concept of systemic design. Earlier attempts to integrate systems thinking in design have largely failed. Explanations for this failure have been arguments about systems approaches being alien to designerly ways, or the systems approaches have been too inflexible and dogmatic and the seamless integration into designing has failed. But there might be other additional reasons that so far have been largely overlooked. I will argue that design over time has developed a series of concepts in dealing with complex issues and to generate holistic resolutions. Some of these ideas and concepts are so basic and embedded in the designerly DNA that this might explain why they have not been looked at closer in this discussion. Systemic approaches have faced a resistance when entering the fields of design not only because they misfit but also because they had to compete with already embedded and integrated approaches and concepts. The radical potential of systemic design is that it might create new ways of relating design and systems thinking and hence also these inherent designerly concepts. Understanding the inherent ideas and concepts in regard to systemic design will shed more light on the problems systems thinking has faced regarding the design field. I propose that these designerly concepts to deal with complexity and create holistic solutions are the core of what design brings to systems thinking. One of the central features of the designer is the ability to create harmonic wholes. Confronted with many demands, briefs, complexities the designer aims at generating one holistic response that solves some or many of the contradictory inputs in the shape of a more or less esthetically beautiful and elegant form. In resent debates in design research this ability to design has been regarded as less important compared to the effort to move design closer to scientific research. If this shift comes at the cost of the mentioned central ability it will be catastrophic on several levels. First this designerly ability is truly the hallmark of design work and it is a genuinely specific activity that is particular to designers. We might find seemingly similar activities in other neighbouring fields like art and engineering, but none of them have the complete and versatile version as found in design. There is a danger that abandoning this root competence will destroy design. The core competence of composing holistic solutions will erode and we will see lesser solutions. Even as we speak discussing beauty, elegance and aesthetics in the context of systems thinking seems problematic.

The Second Symposium of Relating Systems Thinking and Design was held in Oslo, Norway at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design 9-11 October, 2013. The second Oslo symposium engaged over 120 participants in the emerging renaissance of systems thinking in design. The emerging context is being revealed in transdisciplinary responses to increasing complexity in all challenges faced by designers, innovators, and decision makers everywhere. Our worlds have become too complex for linear and goal-driven management, as the modern world is experiencing in hopelessly complicated social, economic, and political institutions. The global demand for sustainability, democratic economies, and better education, employment, and development has resulted in new movements, but perhaps insufficient redesign. The emerging social arrangements have become too complex for conventional thinking. Sociotechnical, service, and activity systems are characterized by highly complex and emergent human-system relationships, and benefit from nonlinear and creative design practices and engaged research perspectives. Design practices found effective in fields such as healthcare, governance, environmental stewardship, organizational management and social change, are of particular interest for cases and discussion in the conference. The interrelationship between systems thinking and design action was the theme of last years RSD seminar at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. In re-examining the relationship of systems thinking to design we believe it possible for systems thinking and design praxis to develop the foundations for new, interrelated practices. This synergistic relationship will launch a new generation of systems-oriented thinkers empowered with the creativity and perspectives of design thinking. As educators and researchers, we also seek better theoretical foundations and rigor in design thinking. Systemic Design has been suggested as a term for this emerging movement in design with its multiple expressions including e.g. Systems Oriented Design, Whole Systems Design, and is closely related to Dialogic Design. What binds systems related theories and practices together with design approaches may be the desire to reintroduce systems approaches with design toward a more effective integrated praxis, becoming more useful to designers (and stakeholders and clients) than evidenced by past performance. This implies the reshaping and design of systems approaches and the related practices so that they are better integrated into design processes. Papers and presentations were organized for the following themes: •New systemic practices in design •Rethinking systems approaches from a design perspective •Relating design praxis and systems thinking •The role of systemic design when developing design practices in new areas •Teaching (systemic design or), systems thinking in design. (or design in systems approaches) •Relating systems and design theories, conceptually and pragmatically

Around 2005 the concept of Systems Oriented Design (SOD) was slowly emerging. This happened organically through experimental design practice and education- based R&D at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Centrally in SOD is Gigamapping, a technique to map out, contextualize, and relate complex systems, their environment and bigger landscape, their current state, as well as preferred future states. The role of the Gigamap is constantly developing. This process has partly been a planned research process and partly a process of discovery and conceptualization through research by design. This chapter recapitulates and analyses this longterm process of developing the concept of the Gigamap. It goes through and discusses the sources and inspirations, the framing and methodology, and the concepts that were described until recently. Some of these concepts emerged as tacit knowledge made explicit; others were systematically planned and developed over time. The paper concludes by introducing a new sense sharing model for visual collaboration.

The role of the Gigamap is constantly developing. This process has not been an intentional process but a process of discovery. By looking at some obvious roles of the Gigamap closer new concepts crystallize. This working paper reports on the rethinking of the Gigamap as a tool to design a shared picture of complex systems for systemic design intervention. The role of the Gigamap as bridging device to detect and cover destructive ruptures in the design process is investigated closer. Investigating the ruptures leads to understanding better the qualitative features the maps depict and how these features can be shared. This leads in the end to a proposal for a Sense Sharing Model

OSSTS: Oslo Sound Space Transport System An OCEAN project Concept, sound, composition and audio programming and sensor design: Natasha Barrett Project management: Natasha Barrett, Birger Sevaldson Installation concept: OCEAN, Natasha Barret, Michael Hensel, Birger Sevaldson Projections: OCEAN, Joakim Hoen Room design: OCEAN, Søren Skjensvold Sørensen Design collaborators: Silje Maloney Barth, Marianne Røthe Arnesen, Alexandre Chappel, Lawrence Ssekitoleko The project is sponsored by Kulturrådet NOTAM Galleri AHO The Oslo Sound Space Transport System (OSSTS) is an interactive sound-space installation that allows you to journey through Oslo's real acoustic architecture and explore surreal and fictional Oslo-inspired sound-spaces. An interactive interface provides complete freedom to travel where you wish, as well as in real-time hear your own voice as if you were in these real spaces. OSSTS uses 3D acoustic room models, a 3D loudspeaker projection system, binaural headphone rendering, video projection and a continuum from sound-reality to sound-fiction. The concept and sound composition of OSSTS was created by composer Natasha Barrett and the physical installation space was created by designer Birger Sevaldson and the OCEAN Design Research Association. The installation is produced by the OCEAN design research association. Natasha Barrett (UK / NO) is one of the worlds leading electronic music composers. Her works span the diversity of interactive installations to live-electronics, concert composition, sound-art and a fascination with sound and space. After many years of international prizes and recognitions, in 2006 she received the Nordic Council Music Prize. OSSTS is her third project in collaboration with Birger Sevaldson and the OCEAN Design Research Association resulting in five installations. Birger Sevaldson is a designer and professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design working in a wide range of design research. He has been in a long term collaboration with Natasha Barrett on the context of OCEAN. The projects main funding was by the Cultural Council of Norway through an application by OCEAN. The first half was the financing of a one year long composition and sound creation project. The second half was funding for the construction of the installation space, interface and sound system.

Systems Oriented Design in Maritime Design Systems Engineering in Ship and Offshore Design Conference. 2012 The Royale Institute of Naval Architecture ISBN 978-1-905040-98-8 Systems Oriented Design (S.O.D.) is the designerly way of systems thinking. It is tuned towards working with the dynamics of human activity systems and its interactions with technology rather than constructing technological systems. The complexity in modern high end ship building has increased on several fronts. This is especially true for the design of vessels for very complex offshore operations demanding visualisations of rich information to the officers on the bridge or other operators and human actors, to facilitate fast and reliable control. A holistic approach to the interplay between human activity systems and between human and technical systems becomes crucial when regarding e.g. safety. Such holistic approaches in maritime design are hindered because the production processes are extremely complex. Customized solutions, dependencies between subcontractors, class rules and safety regulations make innovation difficult. The result is often a compromise that does not render the optimal solutions. Through focussing also on the innovation process as a human activity system, involving e.g. the client, class organizations, authorities etc, S.O.D. holds the promise to help to bridge these problems. Through the visualization of super complexity and visions for the near future one can communicate and create enthusiasm and willingness to stretch innovation processes across the organisations, from the board room to the authorities. The paper will present and discuss some early findings and innovative cases from oil spill recovery and ship bridge design and discuss how the approach of S.O.D. can contribute to radical innovation in maritime design.

This article describes processes connected to Ergonomics in design and Systems Oriented Design and how these two lines of thought in design might be related. Doing this we aim at suggesting a more holistic approach and a better understanding of the notion of Ergonomics in Systems Oriented Design. The paper raises questions about models for interdisciplinary collaboration and the emergence of complex learning networks to address very complex design tasks.
