The internet and technological revolution will in the next decades be forcing several traditional cultural institutions to rethink their form and position in society. Under these conditions the cinema must radically reconfigure itself as a new institution to keep its physical presence.
These days, most cinemas are getting digitalized. The old cinemas were a necessity of their time; today the digitally based cinemas are no longer limited to their existing boundaries, which open for new possibilities.
In the digital age we are observing a tendency towards a more individual and less collective experience of film, which is causing the cinema to become less physical and architectural, though the change is positive for the progression of the film scene.
The project is looking for a way to unite the technological progression with a collective experience of film. Through a programmatic/technological research and development, the project proposes a series of plausible cinemas that are different responses to the current condition.
In a commercial, eclectic context the building is seeking attention through mystification and simplicity.
The project is addressing the relevance of Los Angeles as a city whose identity and experience has emerged through the film industry and pop-culture. The architecture is culture – specific, by incorporating several contextual features such as the billboard, the movie sets, the open lobby, spaces of spectacle and generous parking.
