Jan MICHL (*1946) is a professor of design history and theory at the Institute of form, theory and history (FTH) at AHO, and an adjunct professor at the Faculty of computer science and media technology at the Gjøvik University College (HiG), Norway.
He was born in former Czechoslovakia, and educated at the Masaryk University of Brno, now Czech Republic (PhDr., 1975), and at the University of Uppsala in Sweden (fil.kand, 1971), with art history, languages, and economic history as main subjects.
Since early 1980s he has lived in Oslo. He was a part of the Institute of design both before and after the institute joined the AHO in 1996; since 2005 he has belonged to FTH.
His research interests lie in the field of design theory, more specifically within the theory of modernist design and its alternatives. He has published widely on these and related topics.
