Guest studies outside AHO's network of agreements

Many students wish to do guest studies at universities outside AHO’s network of agreements as part of their master’s degree. AHO welcomes this kind of student mobility, but be aware that the application process may require more work for the student herself, and that you should start planning your application early.

When you have found a school of interest, the first thing to do is to find out whether the school accepts guest students/visiting students/free movers. Many schools have arrangements for this, and you will in most cases be subject to the same terms as ordinary exchange students, even if you do not qualify for a scholarship. Contact the international office at your desired destination and find out all about application procedures and deadlines.

Recognition
It is very important that you apply to AHO for pre-recognition of a proposed study plan for your guest studies prior to departure. A written application including information on the institution and courses you will follow will be handled by the AHO Assessment Committee. The study plan must consist of relevant courses at master’s degree level answering to 30 studiepoeng/ECTS per semester. The Academic Services will assist you in writing your application for pre-recognition.

Attachments to application
The application requirements will in many cases be more comprehensive than for applications within the network of agreements. Many schools require portfolio, letters of recommendation from teachers, documentation of language competence etc. The Academic Service will provide transcripts and general confirmation.

Language requirements
In some countries there are strict demands for language requirements. If you apply to institutions in the USA or the U.K., you will in many cases have to take a TOEFL- or IELTS-test.

Visa and residence permit
If you hold a residence permit in Norway, you are entitled to stay in any Schengen-country for three months without having to apply for visa. The local police authorities and/or the international office at your host institution will inform you how to register for a student’s residence permit for a longer period of time.

Depending on your nationality, different requirements apply for visa and residence permit in countries outside Schengen. Contact the international office at the host institution and/or the embassy of the host country in Norway for information on how to apply.

Tuition fees
When you apply for guest studies outside AHO’s network of agreements, the receiving institution may require application- and tuition fees.
