The Role of Hand Drawing in the Making Disciplines

Recently drawing has lost ground to other media as a means of representation, both in practice and education.

Taking my own pedagogic program as an empirical point of departure, I will explore drawing as an important source of knowledge in the making disciplines such as art, architecture and design. More specifically, I critically investigate the current emphasis on visual skills in our contemporary "society of images".

Does this focus on visual expression mean that developing visual thinking will be a part of our future upbringing and formal education? And if so, does hand drawing help to acquire such skills, or does its techniques and methods simply "get in the way"?

Through empirical and theoretical studies of the epistemological and aesthetic significance of hand drawing, I aim to approach some of these overarching questions, exploring, along the way different means, methods, and techniques applied in teaching of hand drawing in the architecture and design schools.
