Generative design system based on evolutionary computing

Veiledere:  Birger Sevaldson, Martina Keitsch

The focus of interest in the thesis concentrates on the overlapping field of two domains: architecture and computer science. The recently developed term of design computing in particular, marks this field of research interest characteristically.

The research objective is to develop principles (constituents) of a generative design system – a computer program capable to be a creative design tool during the early stages of architectural design.

The foundation for this development lies in an assumed analogy between a design process and a process of natural evolution.

A central object of a design process – a building model, as a complex structure of interrelated elements, is identified with a system (as defined in a general system theory). The analogy is then discussed in the perspective of constructing the generative design system.

The principles of sustainable architecture play a significant role in developing the generative design system, as they serve as a reference of architectural qualities (values) for the computer system.
