Towards an Oslo School of interaction design

The latest number of the international journal Computers and Composition is a special issue on interaction and communication design. Guest edited by Prof. Andrew Morrison, from the Institute of Design at AHO, this number contains eight articles from research carried out in Oslo.

The articles 'highlight attention to critical engagement through research from two collaborating institutions: the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (Institute of Design) and the University of Oslo (including Inter Media, an interdisciplinary research center, and the Department of Media and Communication). The articles are drawn from a number of funded projects, and they involve senior researchers and recent PhD students in collaborative composition, design, and writing.

It is perhaps the ongoing interdisciplinary co-designing for engagement, fuller inclusion of participant experience and meaningful cultural exchange that marks what might be called the “Oslo School” of interaction and communication design.

In his Letter from the Editor, Morrison argues that 'The design aspects of digitally mediated exchange are often passed over in favor of studying users and use. Such studies are important, but if we ignore what motivates and shapes the design of interactional tools and related affordances for communication, we cannot fully assess the quality of the design behind what is being mediated.'
