This week, the Institute of Urbanism and landscape at AHO is viewing an exhibition in the municipal hall in Dar es Salaam. The exhibition displays the results from the studio course "Kariakoo tranformations in the south" which was conducted in cooperation with ARDHI University.
The Institute of Urbanism & Landscape at AHO opened an exhibition at the municipal hall in Dar es Salaam on the 20th of september 2011. The exhibition presents the studio findings and design proposals developed by 15 students from AHO in autumn 2009 in the "Kariakoo tranformations in the south" studio. The Studio was headed by Prof. Edwards Robbins, Anders Ese and Minna Riska in collaboration with group of staff and students from ARDHI University, lead by Prof. Ezekiel Moshi.
The Mayor of Dar es Salaam, Jerry William Silaa, opened the exhibition on Tuesday accompanied by the Deputy Vice chancellor Prof. Eliuter Mwageni and a delegation from the Norwegian Embasy in Dar es Salaam.
Kariakoo is a market area in Dar es Salaam with a population of 50,000. The area is also visited daily by 210,000 people from the surrounding areas. The district is characterized by rapid growth and has undergone a radical development in the last decade. Kariakoo presents an interesting and complex dilemma for urban designers and architects. The development has created urban challenges such as lack of adequate drinking water, pollution and traffic problems. At the same time Kariakoo a very vibrant and exciting town, both commercially, socially and culturally.
The aim of this studio course is to learn how to plan for a complex non-Western urban environment, and learn how social and cultural factors are identified and included in programs for the urban landscape. Read more about the studio course "Redesigning Kariakoo".
