Oslo–Tokyo exhibition is about a subjective relation each designer have to objects; a designed interpretation based upon personal stories from each of the designers, repre- senting an individual perception of Oslo.
By making objects inspired by each designers individual appreciation of their hometown, they have made a collection of stories, which they have brought to Tokyo on a mission to exchange design culture. The prototypes featured are results of a materialization of the designers individual stories. As a whole, this exhibition shows a snapshot of Oslo’s emerging design scene.

The intention is to promote Norwegian designers internationally and Oslo as a design destination, as well as maintaining Norwegian designers presence on the Japanese/Asian design scene as a necessary follow-up of previous initiatives.
In addition, it is important to create an independent platform for designers’ self-initiated projects to stimulate innovation and research in the field. The hope is that the exhibition wiill facilitate international networking and collaboration capabilities with design studios and manufacturers.
Design Tide is chosen as the venue for the exhibition because it is one of the most important design arenas in Asia. In addition to a large Japanese audience, press and manufacturers from around the world will visit Design Tide.
Globalization has created a new international culture also in design, product and market culture. The “Norwegian” origin as a geographical affiliation, has in recent years become less relevant as a sales argument. We have therefore chosen to focus on the individual designer’s experience of Oslo.
The brief given to the designers in advance, was to develop a prototype based on a specific situation or place related to the city of Oslo. Materials, manufacturing techniques, uses, etc. was up to the individual exhibitor. It is through the exhibition framework that the stories behind the product is communicated, and not necessarily the object itself.
In relation to the actual exhibition opening, all products and individual stories will launch at the OsloTokyo website www.oslotokyo.com
