Ny bok: Exploring digital design

New book on digital design research

Andrew Morrison, professor at the AHO Institute of Design and assistant professor at Intermedia, UiO, has been a major contributor to a new book on digital design recently published by the University of Oslo.

Entitled Exploring Digital Design. Multi-Disciplinary Design Practices, the collection of collaborative chapters discusses current issues in digital design research.

Alongside the editors Dagny Stuedahl (University of Oslo), Tone Bratteteig (University of Oslo) and Ina Wagner (Vienna University of Technology), as well as several other researchers within the field, Morrison is the co-author of 6 of the 9 articles in the book, primarily on methods, practices and analytical perspectives within digital design research.

Morrison has also contributed on an article on online advertising and the promotion of as yet to be built domestic properties named ”Unreal Estate: Digital Design and Mediation in Marketing Urban Residency” (with Synne Skjulstad), as well as a piece on the collaborative and developmental design of the social calendaring/network service Underskog: ”Whisperings in the Undergrowth: Communication Design, Online Social Networking and Discursive Performativity” (with Even Westvang and Simen Svale Skogsrud)

Andrew MorrisonAndrew Morrison, Ph.D., is associate professor at InterMedia, an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Oslo and Professor of Interdisciplinary Design at the Institute of Design, Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO). Morrison is head of the Communication Design Research Group at InterMedia and is Leader of Design Research at the Institute of Design (AHO).

His current research is into mixed reality arts, mediatized persuasion in branding and advertising, the collaborative design of a mobile GPS narrative and design and research into digital research rhetoric online. He publishes research and supervises graduate students in these areas at AHO. His earlier research and participatory design has been into academic communication and electronic literacies, critical discourse and HIV/AIDS education and prevention.

Morrison has co-edited Digital Media Revisited (2003, MIT Press, with G. Liestøl and T. Rasmussen); as well as the more recent Inside Multimodal Composition (2009, Hampton Press), a collection of multidisciplinary design and practice-based research pieces with Communication Design at its core.

Extract from Preface:

Digital design is an important element of our lives. We live with designed environments filled with designed things: systems, media and all sorts of artefacts. Many of these are digital or partly digital. In order to understand contemporary society and culture it is important to study digital designs and how they are weaved into our daily practices. It is, however, just as important to understand the processes of digital design that bring about these digital elements in our lives.

This book: Exploring Digital Design, presents a research-oriented view on design, and explores how to analyze design in digital domains. It takes a closer look at the diverse disciplinary sources of the current discourses about digital design, paying special attention to the humanities exploring how they can enrich a design discourse currently dominated by design professionals and philosophers.
