The swine flu: AHO takes measures

The Health Authorities are expecting an increase in the numbers of A(H1N1)/swine flu this autumn, AHO is in dialogue with our company health service in relation to preventing and reacting to eventual spreading of the disease.

According to the national information web site www.pandemi.no the government estimates that ca. 25 % of the work force will be indisposed by the pandemic. This is a high percentage, that AHO as a school and a place where people meet needs to relate to, says director Einar Fagerås. In June AHO published a plan discussing how the school should meet an eventual pandemic infection, as well as how important services and tuition will be upheld during a pandemic period.

According to the plan, the pandemic now is in a "yellow phase", that is under close surveillance and still under control.  At this stage, AHO does not initiate any specific measures, but reminds all about the general advise to prevent spreading and catching the flu (see information box on the right). In addition, a “Guide to correct handwash” is mounted in all AHO restrooms.

If AHO were to be struck by a high level of influenza infection, measures taken may include closing the cantina, reducing student gatherings, working from home for employees as well as a higher level of infection reduction means in the schools localities. - These are considerations we will take when we see how the disease develops, says Einar Fagerås.

Have you caught the flu?

People infected with the A(H1N1)-virus or with symptoms of such infection are encouraged by the The Norwegian Institute of Public Health to stay at home until the symptoms are gone, or at least 7 days after you first became ill.

See also www.pandemi.no for more information about the disease and how to prevent infection.

Avoid catching or spreading the flu:

  • Use disposable tissues
  • Use your elbow, not your hand, when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and as often as possible. Don't forget the thumbs!
  • If unable to wash your hands, use disinfecting liquids.
