Recycling and social mingling were in focus of the third annual PANG!-happening at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design September 9th. All students and staff were invited to the event, where this years task was to create a vehicle, which as fast as possible could transport as many people as possible from A to B, in an as conseptual and original way.
AHO joined hands with recyckling firm Franzefoss, who provided five containers of junk made out of metal, wood and assorted wheels. Some of the participants were surprised by the quality of some of the materials, as it seemed to be usable items that easily could be repeared instead of thrown away. But then again, part of the aim for the day was to create a higher conciousness of reuse and recycling among the young architects and designers.
After an intense building section in the AHO courtyard, there was a car race at neadby park Kuba. being blessed with wonderful september sun, the event soon was followed by a rather large audience. The cars ran in heats of two, and when bath-tub cars, priat-ship cars and batmobiles had battled, car no. 6, "Bånn-ski service" finally won with a time of only 7 seconds.
After the race, the jury, with members rector Karl Otto Ellefsen, associate Professor in sustainability issues Marius Nygaard and Franzefoss' Pål Troye, awarded the prizes for the highest number of passengers and for originality an consept. "The wooden leg", who fasilitated 11 passengers, won the passenger prize, whereas it was the car made by "Pimpsjonistene", og "The Bee", who drew the longest straw for the prize of originality and concept. Whereas the two runners up for this award, no. 3 "AHORSE" and no. 9 "Gladiator" also were praised for their consept and technology, "The Bee" won because of its simplisity and modest use of materials as well as a well thought-through concept.
The bathtub car "Wed dream" was given a "Lucky loser" prize, as a timing error might have cost the team a place in the semi finals. Still, there were few sad faces to be seen. After a long day of building cars, the students and staff could enjoy themselves in the sun with free food, drinks and music the whole afternoon.
The awarded cars will be exhibited in AHOs Gallery, together with pictures from the event.
