Interactive light design in Belfast

Associate professor at AHOs Institute of Design, Anthony Rowe, is represented at the ISEA 2009: the Exhibition in Belfast with the installation Stealth. The exhibition lasts until 1. September.

The Stealth Project is developed as an offshoot from 'Ocean of Light', a research project exploring the creative possibilities of volumetric (or 3D) visualisation techniques, and nontactile 3-dimensional interaction.

The physical centrepiece of the project is a Baby NOVA, a kind of three-dimensional light grid, as well as NOVA, the world’s first full-colour real 3D LED (light emitting diodes) video screen. NOVA was conceived to visualize scientific data dynamically in three dimensions.

The Stealth Project is developed by the research group  in collaboration with ETH Zurich and horao GmbH. The technology is based on research part funded by the Arts Institute at Bournemouth, and with additional support from University of Wales, Newport.

Squidsoup is an open group of collaborators built around Anthony Rowe, Gaz Bushell and Chris Bennewith. Anthony Rowe, creative lead and Squidsoup founder, is also Associate Professor of Interaction Design at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

Squidsoup’s work combines sound, physical space and virtual worlds to produce immersive and emotive headspaces. They aim to allow participants to take active control of their experience. They explore the modes and effects of interactivity, looking to make digital experiences where meaningful and creative interaction can occur.

Their work has been shown at numerous festivals, seminars and galleries around the world including the V&A (Late at the V&A), London , Graphite (Perth Australia), Late at Tate Britain etc.. Recognition includes an EMMA (Best On-line Art 2000) and a BAFTA nomination (Interactive Arts 2002).

The Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (ISEA) is an international nonprofit organization fostering interdisciplinary academic discourse and exchange among culturally diverse organizations and individuals working with art, science and emerging technologies.

ISEA oversees the International Symposium on Electronic Art, a regular gathering of the international art, science and technology community. Part of the symposium is the exhibition, which aims to presents internationally leading edge artists from across the globe in an unprecedented multi-site exhibition.
