Guest lecture: Kumiko Inui

This weeks guest lecture is with japanese architect Kumiko Inui, principal of Kumiko Inui Office, Tokyo.

Kumiko Inui (b. 1969 in Osaka, Japan) received her Bachelor of Arts from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1992, and in 1996 she graduated as Master of Architecture from Yale University.

After working at Jun Aoki and Associates from 1996-2000, she established the Office of Kumiko Inui in 2000. She has won a number of competitions and awards for her work, which includes Apartment I, Dior Ginza, Small House H and Shin-Yatsushiro Monument.

In a comment in the book Kumiko Inui: Episodes (Contemporary Architects's Concept Series 3: 2008), fellow japanese architect Ryue Nishizawa states "What is truly characteristic of her is her serious and sincere attitude towards architectural creations... I feel great sympathy toward her basic attitude, to sincerely create architecture, with consistent effort. And I believe that this basic attitude will surely lead to the architectural creations of tomorrow"

The Episodes-book was published in 2008 and presents a number of Inuis works to date. In an article in Japan Architect in 2008, Kumiko presented her work and ideology under the heading "The Observation of Things at or near Their Threshold"

Alongside her practice, she has also been teaching at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (2000), Showa Women’s University (2006) and Tokyo University (2008). In 2010 the is visiting professor at AHO, teaching in the  architecture masters course V10AS5 with Neven Fuchs-Mikac.
