Guest lecture: Sarah Wigglesworth

Sarah WigglesworthSarah Wigglesworth was educated at Cambridge University from 1976-1983. Since 1994 she has run her own practice, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, in London.

The office portfolio includes master planning, cultural buildings, offices, private and social housing and structures for education, arts and sport. They specialize in low energy and sustainable communities and in making buildings that inventively use readily-available materials.

In their own description, they state “Integrative design is at the heart of everything we do and this involves clients and users as much as other technical advisors. We bring a high level of commitment and ambition to all projects and, working closely with stakeholders and communities, we aim to create environments that are valued by and meaningful to users, can be achieved with modest means and can be maintained economically”.

Key projects include the award-winning Straw Bale House and Quilted Office project (RIBA Sustainability Award 2004, Civic Trust Award 2003 and FS/Blueprint Best Residential Building of the Year 2001) and the Siobhan Davies Studio in South London (2006 RIBA Award).

In 1998 Sarah Wigglesworth was selected by the Sunday Times in their ‘Hot 100’ poll as one of three architects most likely to make an impact on their field in the next ten years. In addition to her practice activities, Sarah has been Professor of Architecture at the University of Sheffield since January 1999, and has lectured worldwide.
